Kinda pissed off today for a multitude of reasons so my girlfriend said to meet her for lunch (burgers!) to calm down. Good call.
I was still brooding when I stepped outside, noted it was nice out, made my way across the parking lot, looked up and smiled.
Why did I smile?
Look at how bright it is. That red under direct sun is freakishly bright...pictures can't capture it. I'm entirely serious.
And while driving along the highway on ramp I was looking at cars backed up on the off ramp...and some guy was staring at me as I was staring at him. Some searching on the internet led me to this:
Dark blue Ferrari 458 Italia.
I was checking that out, he was checking my car out.
Then I got a burger.
And I'm going to a battle of the bands show in Boston (FREE! if you're in the area, btw).
Sufficiently uplifted.

Literally?

That would probably work.

I am always happy as shit to wake up in the morning to drive to work, because I get to drive your car's brother!
And you are right, pictures do not do this color justice, the color just pops

where are you playing?

Baby brother!
I parked in the very center of a lot with nobody around me for ten spaces (the shopping area was a big loop so people parked at the edges). It was the brightest car in the lot.
I never thought I would have a red car, I'm partial to blue, but the way that the light hits it just sold me instantly.

It's not my gig but my girlfriend's brother.
They are in the semi-finals for the 92.9 Earthfest opening spot. Playing at Ned Devine's at Faneuil Hall tonight at 7pm.
BIG BAD BOBBY AND THE SHOEHORNS!
Oddly enough, none are named Bobby and I have yet to see a shoehorn.

Big brother!
The color just has a strange hue to it, it's not particularly bright, but it stands out against all other colors really. All the cars that I have purchased (with the exception of my Accord, but that was a hasty purchase I don't count it), that I really waited for, have been red, I just love red cars apparently. I found mine on carmax, and decided to look at it, I loved the color, and knew I would never lose it, because it was in the middle of the carmax lot, and I could see it from inside the store.
Plus, that turbo spool sounds awesome as shit. These cars just beg you to floor it all the time.

Floor it?
This was my first purchase (I had a leased Fusion in bordeaux, fancy maroon I guess) so a trend hasn't been established. I just won't be getting a silver, white or black car any time soon for sure.

Floor it!
First hmm? Well you made a good choice! I love these little cars, they are way too much fun. But, just remember, when getting a red car, especially such a vibrant red, touch ups with the paint are one thing, but say a panel gets damaged, it's going to be a major pain to get the paint matched up, so while hooning, make sure you hoon carefully.

I'm easing my way into it...got it the last week of June 2013 and have been learning how to drive stick since. I literally learned the week of my purchase (through test driving a few across multiple dealers) just so I could drive it home myself.
I haven't been in an accident before and hopefully won't have anything happen (currently knocking on wood). I'll say that the overall agility of this car has saved me from a handful of potential accidents already.

Damn learning a stick in an ST? Probably not a bad idea actually, I've been driving 5 speeds all my life, and they were all old, and 100% mechanical, so when I started driving this thing the clutch kicked my ass, still is, I've only had it for about 3 weeks now, it's like relearning how to drive a stick. And that is pretty awesome man, if a new car isn't motivation to learn something new I don't know what is.
That's what I love about these cars, they will save your ass, the brakes on mine actually saved me from getting T-boned today, some dumbass decided to blow a stop sign in front of me. On my way back to work I took that same stop sign, NO WAY she did not see me. Some people are just really dumb.

I was shopping the ST, WRX and BRZ/FRS and one of the dealers had a Mazda6 that they was going to auction so they let me have a whip at it...didn't stall so they let me out on the street. Worked out well so I eventually went all in on the ST. Went to a dealer and called ahead, they had one ready, asked if I could drive, I said once. Raised an eyebrow and eventually I was on the street kicking it to 70mph for a good feel. Guy wasn't thrilled but he never said not to!
They wouldn't play ball so I went back to where I had my lease, told them where I was that day and they knocked another $500 off their already great price to me. Bought it that day, took it home the next.
I was determined not to have anyone else but me drive it home. I love driving manual and can't imagine buying an auto ever again. It's worth the work to learn for sure.
And I've had the same thing happen. Another one was someone brake checking after cutting me off. Acceleration has saved me from bad situations as well when someone took a wide turn into my lane while another person was tailgating...couldn't brake, couldn't swerve into the next lane cuz someone was next to me, it was a mess that I escaped very quickly in second gear. Thank goodness for torque.

Haha not bad, I remember on my test drive some guy in a beat to shit Silvia decided to try and get cute, and thats when I learned the torque on the little Fiesta is pretty insane for it's size/weight.
And that is awesome man, glad to hear you got the car you really wanted. It was different for me, I was looking for a car, any car, as long as it struck my fancy and I liked it, was looking for like 2 months, and one morning looked up carmax, found the ST, and decided in 5 minutes "I'm buying it". Used my savings to pay off my current car, pulled out a loan, went to carmax, and within 2 hours was driving it home, it was awesome.
Speaking of torque, have you really gunned it? The torque steer is pretty high in these cars

I have a couple times haha. It keeps you on your toes for sure. I tend to roll into stop lights, scope out my surroundings and if I see someone who has been driving a little questionably...sport mode...just to make things a little smoother off the line. I sometimes get a little over enthused to be honest so the traction control off makes me focus a bit more.

To be honest I haven't really driven a whole lot yet with sport mode on, it makes it cleaner off the line?
![]() 05/08/2014 at 09:19 |

I find that the traction control kicks in pretty quickly on quick launches so that it kind of...idk...skips? Certainly isn't smooth. I don't always but if I anticipate a quicker start than usual I'll go to it.
![]() 05/08/2014 at 09:26 |

Hmm, alright, I'll try it out. It certainly is easy as shit to break it loose in these cars though
![]() 05/08/2014 at 09:34 |
|
I haven't pushed to that point (yet...can't be too sure)...gradual progression. Give it a couple more weeks and you really feel it out.
![]() 05/08/2014 at 09:37 |
|
Well by break it loose I mean spin the tires. And yeah, it's definitely harder getting used to this car as opposed to other cars I've driven and owned.
![]() 05/08/2014 at 09:40 |
|
I've really only spun a handful of times...on purpose, not really as a surprise...because it's part of the feeling out.
I love it haha. Stupid smiles all around.
It's all new to me so it certainly is setting the bar high for anything to follow. I love trucks, too, which is the polar opposite of what the STs stand for. The future seems convoluted but two car'd.
