My mechanic and I are going to have a talk today.
The costs keep ballooning on this project and everytime we talk he brings up that its going to cost more.
I get that the man is a perfectionist and he's trying to fix all the little things he sees wrong in there, but I get the feeling he thinks my budget is unlimited and he's just trying to sneak it in.
the last time we talked he said ti was going to be higher than he though because of parts, and shipping on those parts and then included a quote to install the lift if i ran out time.
This morning he said it was going to be $800 higher than last time, reason; the same parts, the same shipping and this doesn't include the lift install. hmmmm.
I don't think he's being dishonest with me and trying to rip me off, but I don't think he's trying to save me money either. We will see this afternoon when (if) I get it back. Have an old jeep ad for your time.

What project is this? Forgive me for not keeping up.

Original quote
$1600 for the HG
$2600 for the regear with axle service and new rotors.
Current estimate: $5800
granted I've added a water pump a Vacuum switching valve, the head was rebuilt and the shipping on the gears was pricey. he said $5000 with the VSV, water pump, gears shipping AND the lift install ($400) that isn't going to be done. now its $5800 because: The VSV, the water pump and the gears shipping.

Are you in the middle of nowhere? $800 for shipping is a damn lie. Tell him you'll source parts and knock that cost of shipping and parts off his quote. $800 shipping is insane. Ask him for shipping quotes or receipts (he should have no issue showing these to you).

Shipping as $150, I'm not sure where he pulled the extra $800 from.

Ah, though you meant "VSV, the water pump and the gears shipping" as-in $800 for shipping everything.
Ask him for a breakdown? Also, can I ask why you aren't regearing your own stuff?

time, I've got none. I actually really wanted to the the HG, but I'm doing this in a week.
If I had my way, I would have a third car and be working on this one in my spare time...but such is not the way of things.

I can see where you're coming from. I'm hoping to get a newer daily driver some time next year so I can give my E46 the attention it deserves.

NOPE noooope dude gtfoutta there. I'm sure he's a good mech trying to stick behind good work but it does sound like he believes enthusiast= you will pay whatever, and isn't that really the same as getting hosed in the end?
Shit for $5800 you can drive cross country , deep into our NY State Danby forest preserve where my ladyfriend's father and I will do the work in his detached garage, buy us a case of beer and then go offroading on his 40 acres with his Icon-esque 20R FJ60 he built himself, and still have like $3k left.

I know its a rip, but its the going rate for head and gear work. Plus everytime I go in there there are...at minimum...3 different land cruisers being worked on, he is the only guy the cruiser people here in Utah take their stuff too since profit closed up and Cruiser outfitters stopped doing work.

They will install their own stuff, but wont do repairs, they sent me to this guy and, again, I know he's going to do a killer job, but I think he's trying to milk the fees.

Why is there an " 's " here? ... nevermind. I don't really care.
