I was at the UK launch of the Audi S1 today, a 230bhp ball of yellow fury with a 6-speed manual transmission and four wheel drive. It's the best hot hatch I've driven.
Sadly it won't be available in the States - I asked Audi and they confirmed it.
Sorry 'Murica. It's brilliant.

The Focus and Golf, being proper compacts, don't compete with this, do they? And that Chevy doesn't either, despite being in the same size segment.

If I were cross-shopping hot-hatches with a $20-30k budget, they'd end up on the same list. Also, you can't expect shoppers out there to follow ridgid, jalop-worthy demarcation lines. I am the one who decides what will compete for my money, and for my money, the Sonic RS is as worthy an entrant on this list as any of the others.

The only one I'd say was in the same league is the Renaultsport Megane 265 but the S1 is better by virtue of its four wheel drive and better interior (and build quality)

Did anyone expect it to come to America? If they make a Q1S, we'll get that instead.

Fair points. You're obviously the only person qualified to decide what happens to your own money and I didn't mean to argue otherwise. My point was merely that they're not direct competitors in that they occupy different market segments, although people can obviously cross shop them. Some would add the V6 Mustang to the list too, for example.

Don't be so quick to throw out the Chevy
The Focus and Golf are realistically closer competitors to it because they are a bit more upmarket. Of course, none of our hot hatches are AWD....

Small, Turbo, Spacious (for its size, as you said), Well finished, 6-speed manual only, AWD and even sips little gas. I have to admit I'd pick this car over many others at that price range.

Are you just saying that to tick me off?
Yes, it's designed by GM Korea. Except that the chassis was developed by Opel, the styling was done by Holden, and the cars (at least for the US) are built in Michigan.
That being said, the Koreans are starting to make some nice cars, so in my opinion discounting it just because it's tied to Korea in some way is ridiculois

Yeah but there's no 2014 model. The 2014 WRX is the only hot hatch with AWD and manual you could buy right now. There's also the Juke, but annoyingly it isn't available with a stick
