I never did the brown wire fix, but I put the lights and wipers on a relay which helped tremendously.

And yes, I have the swap guide printed out on my desk at work. :) It's an awesome guide.

Needless to say, my stockpile of old metal-case Bosch relays has been handy, lately. For the headlights, use the Volvo relay for, I believe, the power windows. It's labeled "J" on the old 740s, and it is a very nice, metal case, 40A dual-87 Bosch relay.
