For car, truck and HGV drivers who don't ride a motorcycle we bikers can appear to be annoying, weird, wear odd clothes and wilfully undertake something that is inherently dangerous.

Only the last of these is true. Here are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

* In the UK

Most of what you said is right, except for the one about passing on a double white (which is what I'm assuming is a center line in a no-passing zone) here in the US.

I rode for 4 days in the UK once. London>Bath>Weymouth>Eastbourne >London , and it was glorious. You guys don't know how good you have it.

White lining/lane splitting is legal, and everyone knows it. People even got out of my way or put a tire tyre on the shoulder to let me pass when I wasn't even planning on it.

Very bike friendly country you have. 10/10 would ride again.

interesting write up.

my only thing i would complain about is the potential disregard of laws. sometimes there's a double no passing line for different reasons, like it's a blind curve. I wouldn't want to encourage bikers to act that way.

I knew that one would attract some criticism. It's a fine line really, sometimes we can cross white lines but obviously not always

The only thing I know about motorcyclists around here is that they remove the mufflers off of their Harley's because "LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES" yet none of them ride with any kind of gear, save for the bandanna covering their bald spot.

Haha, i'm sure you did!

Speaking as an American, and knowing you wrote your piece for the UK, my part doesn't necessarily apply, but in the US if you illegally pass over a double line (ours are yellow) it's illegal, doesn't matter if you're on a motorcycle, a car, or a tricycle lol

Very true statements. Especially the last.

I don't agree with the first part of #3. Double-lines denote places where visibility up ahead is not good enough to see approaching traffic, it doesn't matter if the vehicle can accelerate quickly or is super narrow, if you can't see that there is no traffic ahead then it is not safe to pass in an opposing lane.

Also, why would someone want to pass a vehicle and not swing into the other lane to give plenty of room for the OTHER driver to be comfortable being passed? Biggest example I have is exiting a freeway last year, we were driving faster than the semi in the lane to our left that was staying on the highway so the gap between us was closing, when out of nowhere a bike going well over 70mph (our speed at the time) split the gap of less than 10 feet (in Illinois, where lane splitting is illegal), scaring the crap out of my dad who was driving and myself in the passenger seat. It's not about making sure the rider feels safe, it's about making sure the other drivers on the road feel safe with what's happening.

Starting from bikes before cars, I can tell you I know the experiences of being a bike owner first make you a WAAAAY safer car driver after.

Been years though, hope I am still as safe as I was when I made the first transition from bikes to cars.

As a two-wheel-bad enthusiast, all I can say is that behavior let's Darwin sort them out of the gene pool for the rest of us.
