I was reading through and caught !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about a Benz 350SDL's value. Myself having witnessed first hand a couple of times the "rod-bender" engine in action, I called it valueless. Regardless, Mercedes did replace a number of the engines up until fairly recently if you made a big enough stink, and those seemed to be reliable, and they are pretty damn fast for a 12V diesel. Then I got to thinking, late 90's W210 spring perch problems kind of killed that car for me, though I like everything else about them. I would never drive an e34 530i because of the nikasil issues, though once replaced, they are fine. What piece of bad engineering would put you off from a particular car?

Gen II small block Chevy engines. The water pump/opti jackassery is a big black eye on an otherwise great engine.

Any Chryler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle from the 1990s-2000s with an automatic transmission, just waiting to self-destruct.

Nissan Sentras/Altimas from 2002-2004 with the QR25DE engine, which had a tendency to eat itself from the inside out, due to poor engineering and substandard emissions control parts.

Honda Odysseys and Accords (automatics) from the late 1990s-early 2000s, which also came with catastrophic transmission failures at no extra charge. However, at least Honda was quite agreeable to replacing those transmissions at a goodwill gesture for practically every customer, even when they were at 150,000 miles or more. If you buy a used one now, you probably won't ever have a problem with it.

Every Japanese car built in the 1970s and 1980s, whose bodies were already starting to rust before they reached the end of the assembly line. Ask anyone who ever owned a Nissan 280/300 ZX.

Any BMW that was equipped with an early version of the iDrive system. E60/E65 models in particular.

Mercedes-Benz S-class sedans with the "ride-tronic" (or whatever it was called) air suspension, which would occasionally catch fire for no obvious reason.
