Who says you need rear wheel drive and lots of power to be fast?
Wolfgang Ziegler raced his Trabant 601 on the Youngtimer Touring Car Challenge in 2011 at Hockenheimring. His modified East German car made of reinforced cotton fibers is powered by an eighty horsepower engine, a two-cylinder air cooled, two-stroke smoker. And it is front wheel drive..
Wolfgang gave a fellow racer on a BMW M3 (E30) a run for his money: while the BMW was much faster on the straights, the lightweight joke-on-wheels that is the Trabant was much faster on the corners, and on lap after lap the commie car leaves the BMW behind and finishes ahead of the Bavarian dream machine.
It goes to show that a well sorted car, on the hands of a good driver, is a good combination for racing!

Videos like this make me want to buy a Trabant. As crappy as a run-of-the-mill street legal Trabant might be, they are still a lot of fun to drive.

A great demonstration of fast car slow v slow car fast. Who do you think's having more fun? The M3 driver having to slow for the corners, or the Trabant driver with his foot down through them? The M3 gets to blast past on the straight each lap, but the Trabbie driver gets the pleasure of hunting down the M3 for successive corners before darting through.
I know which I'd rather be driving there.

Dang it is an ad for the Trabi 601. You can tell they really pulled frames to make it seem quick.
