So school me on these cars. Because of Oppo, I am liking these cars more and more. Expensive to own? Expensive to buy used?

I just did a quick wikipedia search, and HOLY CRAP. I was inundated with info that was well over my head. Too much at once!!
So yeah, teach me.

These were some of the last over-engineered Mercedes-Benz vehicles made before they cut R&D and tripled profits. The W124 was essentially bullet proof and you can find nice clean examples with lots of mileage for very little money. That being said, they are German and when something breaks it will cost a bit to have it fixed, but these are simple cars to work on and are very reliable. There are examples with over 250,000 and 300,000 miles that still serve daily driver duty for their owners.

You could have a W124 with a diesel engine or gasoline straight-6 or V8 and the transmissions were very reliable. All-around a well built tank of a car.

There is a striking difference between Mercedes then and today. Audi and BMW haven't really changed but rather added. They still focus like crazy on performance at least for their flagship models but Mercedes seems to have lost its focus on all models besides the E Class and SLS. I really those two tremendously but their over the top focus on luxury is really ruining the brand for me.

Yes it will. If you need moar powar there's always 500E or 600SEL W140. I once had 600SEL, it's brilliant.

That's what mechanically minded German mates say too, before the accountants took over from the engineers. Mind you a lot of them insist the rot set in (literally) when Benz went over to using recycled steel as opposed to "virgin" steel fresh from the earth. (About when they went over from the /8 to the W123 I think... certainly all my W123s died of terminal body rot. *Sob* I miss them so.)
