Cars and the Platonic Ideal (Trigger warning: Philosophy)

The Greek philosopher Plato held that all things on Earth are but imperfect versions of a perfect abstract ideal version of the thing. For instance, no matter how beautiful a tree may be, it can never be as beautiful as the Platonic ideal of a tree. There was a major flaw in his logic, however, and it wasn't his fault. Plato just happened to live before the invention of the car.

Take this GT40, for instance. All GT40's are beautiful, but the Gulf GT40 with the Guerney bubble is the Platonic ideal of the GT40.

Likewise, the Camel Trophy Discovery is the Platonic ideal of the Land Rover Discovery.

The Volvo with the true, pure, unadulterated essence of Volvo-ness is the 240 wagon, in Beige.

What other examples of cars represent the Platonic ideal of their respective breeds?

You are spot on with the Group B Quattro, but I must say that I'd never really considered an M1 in orange before. It needs further research. Have any more shots of it?

Quick nitpick: that isn't a Defender. This is a Defender:

When I think of the ideal of the defender, i can't help thinking of a 110 in dark green with a white roof.

If a tree falls on a mime in the forest, and no one is around, does he scream? Noodle THAT.

There's something in that, though I actually prefer the 90. Oh, and it should be scratched and grimy, because real off-road car.

That white one with the red stripe is just pornography.

It really hurts me that the defender is so rare here. When you do see one, you get the impression that it isn't even driven in the rain, much less used to pull stumps and go hunting.

It is very nice, though my favourite colour's actually the 'Miami Blue':

The 205 GTi is a full-on dream car for me. I really hope I find myself in a position to own one before they appreciate much more on the used market.

It's exactly the opposite here; I don't think I've ever seen a Defender that looks like it's had an easy life, and I've seen a lot. They're utility vehicles, bought by farmers, zoos and the like, to do exactly what they were designed for. The kind of people who buy big offroaders to feel imposing on the roads never get them, as they've got too rural an image, and are about as comfortable as riding an angular metallic horse.

I took this picture a few months ago, because I thought some Jalops would get a kick out of it:

Grimy, dented and scratched: that's a Defender. (I drive the Peugeot next to it.)
