I was driving through Disney Oklahoma during some huge off-roading festival and amongst all of the old XJs and sandrails I saw a guy in a lifted Jeep Cherokee and my first thought was "this guy is an idiot, offroading in a unibody car." but then I thought about it a bit and wondered if my thinking is correct that if he hits *anything* in that car he'll be more or less completely screwed.
Anyone here that actually *knows* something about off-roading that can set me straight?

the cherokee is a perfectly capable offroader. It is tougher than you might think, despite it's unibody construction. You can't get quite as nuts with the mods without major surjery, but as long as you drive with at least the sense of self-preservation evolution gave a lemming, you will be fine.

Bro, do you even lift?
...Wait, are you talking about a 2014 Cherokee?

Are you talking about these old Cherokees? Because, if so, these are some of the most popular off road rigs out there. Extremely capable with a slight lift and the low end torque from the I6 is always handy in getting out of a jam.

"amongst all of the old XJs and sandrails I saw a guy in a lifted Jeep Cherokee"
XJ is a cherokee. Also, they can be awesome off road.

Mine is relatively stock (3" lift, MTs, haven't even done anything to the diff yet) and offroads like it was born to. It drives much better in 4WD through mud and snow than it ever will on a highway.

that is almost, but not quite, the platonic ideal of a jeep cherokee. Super nice.

M151 MUTT: literally one of the most capable offroaders ever made. Unibody, 4-wheel independent.
Lada Niva: ridiculously capable as well, despite also being unibody and based on a Fiat.
Sometimes, expectations are what you make of them. The biggest helping factor is size of the pseudo-frame relative to weight.

ok Mega reply for you. this is a few trips, 2 to Utah, one or 2 to Badlands offroad park in Attica, IN The purple '99 is mine, still got it but haven't driven in in a long time. The green one at the end is mine too, but it got scrapped.
this also happened that trip
above is transmission problems, I flat towed this jeep with mine for about 800 miles
I later chopped the top of that Green XJ and went around for Halloween like so

Surely you cant be serious.
The xj is one of the beloved off roaders around. Moab jeep easter safari is like 30% xj.
Do you mean the new kl cherokee? They are pretty decent off road, wasnt aware you could life them though.
I drove a stock limited and trailhawk off road in jackson hole and they both killed it.

Nice, looks a lot like the one I used to have. Just a fantastic vehicle all around. ...Might need to get another one.

Whooo! I know nothing about off-roaders. I assumed that body-on-frame was the ideal, due to how ridiculously difficult it is to repair any structural damage to unibody cars.
