I'm sure we've all had it. You browse a used car site and find what seems like the perfect car. You like everything about it, until you see the mileage. When would you consider the mileage on a car so high you'll just walk away regardless of the condition?

I just found the pictured 1989 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with a 5 speed. It looks like it's in a very good condition for its age. Well maintained too. It's priced as a car in good condition. Then I saw the kilometers: 508,000 (316k miles).

As an extra car it probably wouldn't bother me in the least if the price were right. For something that I need for getting back and forth to work I would be leery of anything over 100K while hunting for a used car. Just me though. To be fair, one of my cars is right around 225K miles and I take it to work on occasion. I've had the car 16 years and know every crevasse of it though.....

I just bought an A4 with nearly 150k on the clock with all of the expensive shit already done to it.

I'd probably draw the line at 270,000 depending on the type of car. If it was a P71, I'd have to go unlimited mileage. I talked with a taxi-man with over 500k, running strong still.

I don't go by miles as much as I go by amount of rust.

I really want that car...

My feeling is that these high milers might be a bargain... when in this kind of condition (at least it appears so). It would be worth the money to have it looked over, make sure it isn't rotten underneath, but it requires a lot of proper maintenance and dedication to longevity to get so far and still look so good.

I don't have a number in mind, I just try to evaluate everything together. A 300k car with a full and detailed service history would be ahead of a 150k car that looks good but had little or no documentation and a shady owner.

It depends on the car. Something like a SAAB or a Land Rover (non-Defender) I'd try to stay under 80k miles. But with, say, a Toyota Land Cruiser, or a W123 Mercedes diesel, I'd buy one with 150k miles. It really does depend on the make/model/year of the car, and how well it was maintained. There is no mileage where you can say "Okay, after XYZ,000 miles every car is gone."

Depends on the year and the car, of course, but I'd say 500,000 km is my upper limit for anything that isn't a 90's Camry, or a W123D.

That's a good point, especially if you want more than a disposable car. It's particularly relevant in an area where they salt the roads, like they do here (sometimes). That said, the death traps won't pass inspection and will be off the road.

About the BMW: my first 325ia Touring (120k miles, 0 rust) is being prepared by my mechanic for shipping to the US as we speak...

This is true, and you can always replace parts and engine stuff, where can't always do the same with rust.

75k for a gasser, 100k for a diesel for daily duty. Maybe add 20k if it's a manual trans.

Why so low? My reasoning is that past that point it's all about maintenance. You can buy a 100k gasser that's jammed full of sludge from infrequent and cheap oil changes or you can buy a 175k gasser that's had a semi-pro do everything down to rust prevention at home. I've seen more than my share of 125k+ cars riding around on their original shocks.

Some people don't even know ATF or differential fluid needs to be changed. I've done compression tests on cars before buying them.

I wouldn't even go by brand since it can be a catch-22. Some people abuse maintenance since "xyz brand's engines are bulletproof". My coworker's lexus engine ate shit at 65k. My malibu went 150k with nary a whimper.

There was a Lancia Ypsilon for sale a while back and it had 920.xxx km on it.

Still looked good too.

Not sure if it's a typo or real.

My uncle's Ypsilon failed inspection badly at 99.000..

Do already have a buyer for the 325ia?

As to the iX, the ad says the car was a long-distance (Autobahn) company car, which is probably the only way to rack up this many kms in Europe. After a crack in the head, the engine was refurbished, and they mention a lot of parts that were changed. And that the body was welded (rust repair?) Seems like someone paid a lot of money to keep it on the road. The price seems rather high to me, especially for this mileage. Even it was maintained meticuously and a lot of parts were changed recently the rest of the car must be pretty knackered by now.

When I look for cars, I usually set the search options to stop at 150000 kms, and rarely look for cars in the up to 200000 kms range.

My current 325i will go to a fellow oppo member in the US, who'll register it and will offer it on Ebay. A partner if you will, we'll share the potential profit. My interpretation of the ad for this 325 ix was similar to yours, it's probably a mechanically and structurally sound car but the wear on it will still make it relatively undesirable even it doesn't break, especially for my purpose. I was mostly surprised to see a car with such high kms for sale for a price I'd consider reasonable for a very nice example with 1/3 the kms.

I do have an off topic question for you. If I remember correctly (and I might be wrong) you're somewhere in the South-Western part of Germany. I'll soon have a day or two to kill in München, by myself. If you're familiar with that city, are there things you'd consider as must see places(/activities)?

My big one is if it's had regular timing belts. I can fix most things but a snapped belt trashing the engine internals isn't something I'll deal with. Otherwise I don't care if the price is right.

I am familiar with that city. Depends on what you want to do/see.

- Glockenbachviertel is the place to go bar diving. A former gay part of the town which then became hip (as it happens everywhere).

- Hofbräuhaus isn't the tourist trap it may sound like. Sure it is one of Munich's best-known locations, but they still have normal pricing and tons of locals who frequent the place. But Paulaner-Keller has a nicer beer-garden, and the "Weisses Bräuhaus" from the Schneider brewery (famous for their wheat beer) which is just around the corner from the Hofbräuhaus has one of the best Schweinshaxn (pig's leg with a crust, don't leave town without having tried one) in town.

- I last visited the BMW Museum (not to confuse with BMW World) 20 years ago. It was cool back then. It's within walking distance to the Olympic parc so you could combine the two.

- The Deutsches Museum has a nice-ish car collection too, but there is soo much more to see. They have sections on almost anything technical. Want to see a faraday cage getting blasted with lightning? Just go on their website and see if there is something for you.

- Take a stroll along the banks of the Isar?

- Visit my favourite football club's stadium, do the tour, and pay senseless amounts of money for stupid merchandise??? (Hey, they need to buy new players!)

- If you are more into art, the Lenbachhaus (Blauer Reiter) and the Pinakotheken are always worth a visit.

Tell me more, and I can be more specific.

I'm not that far from Munich right now, maybe we can have a beer together?

Thanks for the info. I'd have a beer with you, sounds like fun. I've never met a Jalopnik member in real life, and we seem to get along.

My sort-of (it's complicated, in a good way) girlfriend is working on her PhD in München, the slight downside is that it's a 850 km (one way) drive from Groningen. I have more time on my hands than she has, so I thought it would be a good idea to explore the city by myself while she's working. Hence my question. I'm not sure when I'll be there just yet though. Due to the distance we don't meet that often, and we just changed our plans and will meet somewhere half way the next time.

I'll be sure to try Weisses Braeuhaus next time I'm there - Schweinshaxn is one of the things I remember most fondly from my trip there, and I love a good Weissbier.

Same here. Driven 200K mile Impalas that were buttery smooth at idle and Hondas that were grainy at 75K.

Just to let you know, I'm in München (Stockdorf to be more accurate) now, and will probably leave next Friday evening. I do have to add that I've only got until 5 or maybe 6 pm each day to roam around town by myself, which I realize isn't exactly accommodating.
