Love them! Want a Carlsson, would settle for an Aero.

Don't do it! I owned one for two years. In that time I spent 1.5 times its purchase price in maintenance. Admittedly, I had a bad one, but even once it was running well it was really not that exciting a car.

Having said that though, I completely understand the urge to buy something quirky and uncommon. Mine was an automatic with the non-turbo 2.3L four - a manual with the turbo engine would be an improvement (especially if it was an Aero).

Here's a pic of mine:

I had a similar feeling about a year ago, proceeded to do a little research, a few months go buy and the want was still there, and I found this.

Kinja'd!!!

1995 Aero for $1000 bucks, with broken 5 speed. (Common for the aero) Junkyard 5 speed, lots of time polishing, and a little paint transformed the car.

My main interest was because it was different, cheap, and turbocharged with open source tuning. Overall the car has been pretty fun for me, except for a few reliability issues that are common in the 9000. (TCS and ignition systems) I was expecting to always carry spare parts, due to many experiences with the multiple classic 900s that a friend of mine has.

definitely takes the right person to enjoy owning a 9000, or most older saabs. I've learned to carry a spares box with the common issue items, all of which are usually easy fixes.

I say DO IT!

I was never crazy about it, but sometimes I see how slab-sided it is and I start falling in love with it... But then I see the back and it puts me off again.

I've never seen it with this face, though.

Those seats look more comfortable than First Class KLM seats.

"Transformed" may not be the right word...

I'm a hugeee 9000 Aero fan. It's one of my all time favorite cars.

My dad has had about 4 of them and the last one I found for him (I'm to young to drive). Never has maintenance been a huge problem. There are the usual Saab things, but Saab is Saab.

As for buying one, me and a fellow Opponaut just spent the last month or so conversing about him getting an Aero with a successful ending! If you would like to read it (as we talk about what to avoid and ones that were bad), here you go:

If you have any questions about them, feel free to ask as I might just know!

My wife and I just got back from an impromptu getaway to Killington, VT. Saw a house right near the Long Trail Brewery on Route 4 with no less than 12 9000s of varying states of decay sitting in the yard. God, I miss having one.
