It's a pretty sweet gig. I was given preference over the other new hire, and as such received the latest Lenovo laptop (three screens FTW) and the World's Best Shift® - the Four Tens. The only caveat to this is one of my tens is Saturday.

Well today is my first Saturday on the shift. I had a few fresh builds to configure and one refresh. That refresh was scheduled by the contractors for 9:00 Texas time, or 8:00 Best Time. I figured in my time for the build, set myself to leave at 11:30, and came in at half past noon. My first build went just fine, right on track. The second one, well it was apparently done by Other New Guy on Friday. Oh well, there's a couple of hours I don't have scheduled any more, I can get the queue down and work on some other things to pad the time.

I just got back from lunch/dinner and had a call from the contractors' boss, saying their tech has some personal issues to attend to and won't be able to make it to the site. It's not even 7 and I'm now out of work. The queues have been cleared of all the work I'm 'allowed' to do, there are no more scheduled builds, and the dynamic builds are so far out there's not even equipment in place yet. So I guess now I sit here for another 4 hours and read Powershell books. Maybe do some training courses. Not sure...

So by "builds"...

What are you doing?

And you reminded me, I really should finish this PS/ Winforms remote backup script someday at work.

Doing a server refresh for all of our clinics. Moving from 2003 std to 2008 R2, from ML350 G6 to ML350 G8. We also handle all of the new clinics getting started up.

At my new employer I got a pretty sweet new rig :)

Dual 27" monitors, i7-4770, and a quadro 4000 :)

Beats the heck out of the dual core i5 and quadro 400 at my old job.

One of the other guys in my office has a quadro 6000 and decided to go with a tv screen instead. While I don't necessarily agree with the tv screen, the rest of his computer is pretty boss.

I'm just a lowly sysadmin, I don't need that kind of horsepower ;)

Can't complain though. Laptop isn't a powerhouse but it's light and gets things done. i5-4300M and 4 GB RAM. A little spec light, but I've had 10-12 RDP sessions (and PuTTYs and billions of CMD windows and Outlook and IE and Oppo and and and) without any issue. I have two 22'' monitors and the laptop screen, giving me a decent enough amount of real estate

I keep wanting to request a 4k monitor, but keep holding off for an ips monitor under $1000, before I ask.

It's not quite the level I'm used to performing, but it is definitely a huge step up from where I was and is quite challenging and rewarding! I am quickly starting to like working in the health care field; it feels like all the typing and scripting I do is making a difference

Yeah, it is making a difference! I like to go home knowing that I made a difference every day.

What do you do for a living?

Now, what I mainly do barely makes a difference.

My part time is at a restaurant.

I worked 4 tens for ten years. It is a great thing. Three day weekends are the best. Nothing better than sitting around when everyone has to go to work on Monday and Tuesday.

HELL YES. I did two weeks of 9-6 training then got a four day weekend before starting the shift. Best part is definitely three day weekends every goddamn week. Tons of time to get shit done like mow and till and plant and rake and clean and clear and build and go back to work
