To assist with high and hot airports Boeing designed the 727 with provisions to accept rocket assited takeoff pods on the aft fuselage. This option was rarely used, but there is video on youtube of it being tested. The option was mainly added at the request of AeroMexico for operations out of Mexico City.

I always liked flying 727s...a ton of power and a fun pilot would use it and climb out like crazy....

I always heard that 727s were the hotrods of commercial aviation (other than the Concorde).

Had a DL 727 flight from BHM-ATL nearly 20 years ago. We were late taking off due to ground activity in BHM. Pilot comes on and says "Flight attendants, please remain seated. Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to cancel the drink service on today's flight. I'm sure you want to get to Atlanta on time as much as I do, so we're just going to bury the throttle and get right to it." Flight time, normally about 40 minutes, was 28 minutes.
