Earlier today I posted a V.F.M.D. post of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and, wouldn't you know it? Just a few hours later I saw it coming back into port. Except it wasn't the John Glenn, it was the Lead Ship of the class, the USNS Montford Point! Neat!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

There's no real difference between the two ships so you can review the link to the Glenn above for some deets. I will point out that the Montford Point was built in under a year! That's right, T-MLP-1 was laid down in January of 2012 and completed in November of the same year. This sounds impressive ... at least until you remember !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . But, you know, the Greatest Generation was in charge back then so there's that.

Remember the USS Cole bombing? Here she is being transported on MV Blue Marlin. Bigger ship, but similar idea.

The Great Leslie : [measuring the iceberg] Thirty seven inches to go. Professor Fate : Oh, 37 inches to go. Huzzah! At the rate we've been melting, that's good for about one more week! The Great Leslie : You'd better keep it to yourself. Professor Fate : Oh, of course I'll keep it to myself. Until the water reaches my lower lip, and then I'm gonna mention it to SOMEBODY!

Holy shitballs! If I were extravagantly rich, I'd own one of these. I would have the best parties on it evarrr! This thing is like a mobile beach, park it off the coast of anywhere and you are ready to go! I'd build everything on the deck to be capable of submerging. And you can lower and raise the water level however you want :D

Interestingly enough, I got offered and internship from NASSCO, the maker of said ship. Their MLP is insane. Turned the job down for a different one, but the work still seemed cool!
