The Volvo S60/V60 Polestar is powered by about fifty pounds of drab black plastic.

Granted if I actually had one of these, I'd keep it on for daily-duty. They do actually provide some perceivable level of sound dampening. If I'm going to an AutoX, I'll take it off

It might be powered by plastic but we still want one. We did a review on the sedan and wagon version here: http://driving.ca/volvo/s60/revi…

I'm not interested. I looked at it at the LA Auto Show last year, and between the automatic only offering, the poor cargo space for a "wagon" (my Golf R is more spacious), and the incredibly high price, it just doesn't appeal to me. It is substantially more powerful than my car, but I am not averse to aftermarket tuning.

Fair points. But if you own a Golf R you kinda already own one of the best semi-affordable fast and practical cars. Have you modified your Golf at all?

Even if I didn't own one, I'd look at the Mark VII R over the Polestar.

It has a few upgrades.

Sound dampening, the engine is hella loud without this cover. Most modern cars are especially with direct injection. Those mechanical fuel rail pumps are running on a cam lobe at crazy high pressures. Tick tick tick tick That is all you hear on mercs, BMW, Toyota products and pretty much anything nowadays without those heavily insulated covers. The engines need them, It's not like "modern engines are complicated" or "dealer only", or even "yeah, lets put this there so it can look clean" Nope, just sound dampening :]

Yeah, I know. I removed the cover on my Golf R's engine (had to in order to install the Neuspeed P-Flo. The increase in noise wasn't a big deal.

They could at least make it look a bit nicer for a $55,000 car..

and that's more of a reason to have it. A person that dropped lots of the moneyz on a cars doesn't want to hear it tick tick ticking. But honestly, it's really difficult to make those look better. I always like the 4.3 V8 on Lexus cover. Once they went to 4.6, things got flat lol.

many many people will disagree, but i like it :]

Not all direct injection engines have it (see: Audi)

I think it depends on the car, the manufacturer, etc...Volvo is pretty sedate so I guess it doesn't surprise me. I don't have a problem hearing the ticking, personally.
