Kinja'd!!!

I ride my bike through the neighborhood in the mornings, and I pass by numerous teens at or walking to the bus stop. Just about every single one of them has earphones in their ears, heads down, staring at a screen. Boy, are they missing out. They need to learn to walk to school like I did when I was their age: with their head up facing the world, with their ears open listening to the sounds around them, smoking a joint.

I think I am a bit younger than you...but I agree. I never use headphones when I walk. I have never understood the appeal.

I'm 47, so yeah, probably. But I, too, hate going around with music blaring in my ears. I never ride with headphones either. It's too dangerous.

If I can hold to it my son won't have a smart phone until after his 18th birthday.

That and walking appears to be quite involved for me. I love looking at the cars, and houses I see when I walk past. Definitely didn't walk into a lamp standard looking at cars once. That wasn't me. No sir, that's never happened before.

kids these days are taught in school to obey an conform to social norms. Doing anything otherwise labels you as mentally unstable.

I used to ride my bike to school in the 7th and 8th grade.

Exactly. And don't forget the Yeti. I had to fight a yeti each day.

It's over...I lost my nieces to iPads and Androids. They wont go outside. The shows they have on TV has zero values IMO compared to what we had back then.

It wasn't that long ago that I was walking to the bus stop but I had to keep my head up...it was like at least one person a day wanted to run me over!

Also, if your head is constantly down how can you know when you should Instagram something!?!?!?

As a "kid these days", I can confirm.

It can be so annoying when someone thinks their phone is more important than the people they are hanging out with.

Whoever sent you that fucking text is not holding their breath to get an answer within 2 minutes, wait till after lunch/coffee/dinner/whatever. Whenever I absolutely have to use my phone in the company of others I begin by apologizing first.

I can't tell you how damn angry I get if in the middle of a sentence the other person pulls out their phone and stops having any idea of what you are telling them.

As someone much younger than that, good luck. Theres about 5-10 kids in my grade without them.

I had to walk to school in the fog! I couldn't see like 5 feet in front of me it was probably really dangerous now that I think about it, but it was awesome fun for some reason. I think my point is that walking in the fog is fun and it is the only memory of walking to school I have. Stupid kids these days.

Isolation, mostly. People are unlikely to bother you if you're wearing headphones - even if you're not listening to anything.

I don't think it's new, the norms are simply different these days.

I think at one time, kids had a mind. It wasn't really about consumerism as much either

People don't bother me that much. I guess it depends how rough the area.

Listening to music and enjoying a beautiful walk is always great. But then again, I am a youngin

Works great for ignoring the bums asking you for change or a cigarette. Especially the ones that will pull a knife on you when you reach into your pocket.
