My Thirsty little 302 from the Montego!

My (not so) Thirsty 318 in Project Thanks Obama! I can get almost 20 mpg from this thing :)

Neat motor, those little 302 fords are good motors,
My super thirsty 350 small block in my pickup.

I'd say it's thirsty, you have 2 carbs on a 350?! Are those 4 barrels? Thats a ton of fuel on a small block!

Great looking motor! But I gotta ask- is that a single return spring??

Sorry for the small pic, don't have anything bigger right now. My fairly thirsty 440. My record high was 8, which only happened once.

not if i got my hands on it lol.
the 302 was a fuel sipper....THEN I GOT IT
![]() 05/01/2014 at 10:42 |

Wow, 8's not so bad for a 440 lol.
I have no idea what mine gets but I can say it goes through it a hell of a lot faster than it used to on the old 2 barrel set up.

How thirsty? Our Jeep's 4.2 (256ci) with a Weber 2bbl will net us about 10mpgs if we're not careful, 16 if we are.
Look at that sucker! It's huuuge!
![]() 05/01/2014 at 10:49 |

Imagine if u had a 4 barrel.
I swear since I went from the stock 2 barrel set up to the holley 4 barell/edelbrock intake I'm just pouring fuel on the ground lol

Usually 5-6. I think it's just because I suck at tuning a carb, I think I should be getting better than that.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 10:51 |
|
probably, but it IS a monster motor, what size carb is on it?
Mine is currently running too rich and I suck with tuning so it does need to be tuned down some.

Yeah it's not going to be this way for too long. Fun Fact: The 318 can be easily bored and stroked to 392.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 10:54 |
|
My dad's 318 is bored .060 over, which isn't a ton, but he's still got the silly 2 barrel on it because he has this "must be original" thing about classics. Then again, it's in this:
![]() 05/01/2014 at 10:58 |

That is awesome, I want it
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:00 |
|
Haha, I doubt he'll ever part with it.
When I say original, I mean ORIGINAL, like not even an incorrect hose clamp. all original police equipment, radios, siren, antennas, everything. He has won countless car shows with it.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:02 |

I want it even more now thanks guy

I don't know how our economy compares to stock carbed Wranglers, because they also had 2bbls of a different make (Carter, I think). Our Jeep came to us with the Weber already installed, in fact it even had a different engine. The VIN says it's supposed to be a 4-cyl!

yeah dual 500 cfm edelbrocks. The motor only drink premium with additive. Bored .60 over and has pop up pistons. Dart heads thing screams in the light weigh pickup
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:07 |
|
yeah only place to mount it. It's a heavy spring. Plus the linkage is progressive so your hardly opening the front carb but when you do it's smooth and returns quickly
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:09 |
|
It's only a 750 CFM
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:14 |

I was just thinking safety; as in if it were to break.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:21 |

the pedal has a lip to pull it back i case that or being stuck wide open. My 68 camaro only had a single from the factory. I do swap for heavier and bigger diameter rod springs.

Hahaha I'll try and dig up some more pics, just to torture you more.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:30 |

ONLY
I'm running a 390 CFM on my 302, 750 is big boy CFM
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:31 |
|
god damn that's a lot of fuel. Though looking awesome at dual carb, wouldn't a single ~1000 CFM be easier?
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:31 |
|
Haha, well sounds like you got a nice upgrade.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:33 |

I think most of them only came with a single from the factory but I'm still leery of just running one. I've got the basic Jeg's dual setup on my 355 and it works really well.

hell yeah!
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:44 |
|
no because the cars are set up with progressive linkage. You mainly drive around on the rear carb and then only when you step down does the front carb come on. Your still putting fuel through the front carb though. For a 600-650 cfm would be a better performing setup but doesn't have the visual pop like a multi carb setup.

Since my dual fours are different here's the small block in my grandfather 56 Chevy try 6x2s!
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:48 |

ill have to look at my pickup again to see if a dual can be run. I won't change the 68 because I'm staying stock and stock looking.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:50 |

Yeah, I like your posts and would hate to see you drop away. LOL. It's a rare occurance but can still happen. Had it go on an old Mustang once so never again for me.

Grab a vacuum gauge and start with the idle mixture. It's easy!
![]() 05/01/2014 at 11:58 |

All I got right now, I'll have to get some better shots next time I'm down in SC where he lives now.

alright, makes sense then!
![]() 05/01/2014 at 12:01 |
|
Sure, come on over! lol
![]() 05/01/2014 at 12:11 |

Wow, 390 is small. Used to have an older truck with a 318 that had a 750. Lots of guys running 1050's and bigger, though they're making more power than me.

I have stock everything -heads/valves/springs/rockers, cam, pistons, not even an over bore. It's only the intake manifold, carb, and dual exhaust that's been added. So it's actually more than enough fuel at this point. It even has small jets in it lol. It's currently putting in too much fuel like I said before, I have to tone it back some.
