It's 3 in the morning. I hear the alarm, and smile. I've only been asleep for a few hours, but I jump out of bed, grab my bag, and hurry out the door. The clock in my car says it's 3:30 AM. Good, I'm early. It also says it's 3 degrees. I don't live anywhere near Alaska, mind you.
The car struggles to start and moves like everything in it froze into sludge. I, however, am not feeling slow or sluggish. I'm stoked for the adventure that lies ahead of me - as well as warm 60 degree weather, dry roads, and roadsters. Yes, roadsters….plural. A trip of a lifetime has been shaping up at FCTV and now, in the dark silence of this very early morning, it's finally go time.
I meet my brother, we load up the gear (but not before setting up a camera for a few quick shots in the near zero degree darkness), and we're off. We get on an airplane. Hours pass. We land in Las Vegas. Forget what you know about reality because it no longer applies here. We hustle to check in at the MGM Grand, get the car, and get the hell out of town. After all, we came to drive and shoot, and the strip is just depressing during the day. It's little more than a visual hangover that needs to be slept off until the sun goes down again and you get back on the horse.
Speaking of horses, how about 340 supercharged ponies? That's what we have under our right foot... well I do, since after about 12 hours of traveling, I'm the lucky one who first gets to drive our red Jaguar F-Type.
The Jag's roof goes down fast, much to our enjoyment. And then, after we put a good amount of road behind us, I notice a fancy dashboard icon that tells me that the roof is not latched. Uh. Ok. Said fancy dashboard is also hooked up to a sat nav that is of no help. We turn it off and instead use Google Maps to find a great looking driving road we spotted while researching Las Vegas.
The car sounds FUCKING AMAZING and I can't help but click it down a gear and make some noise at every opportunity. You can press the shifter over into manual mode for more control and performance, and apparently there is another button labeled "sport" tucked away in the dash that I never saw until about halfway through our trip. With those combined, the car is an absolutely different animal. With them off, it is a docile comfy cruiser - what you would expect a Jag to be, for the most part. With the manual and sport settings engaged, however, it comes alive, and turns into a beast that's sharper and louder, holding the high revs much longer and giving the driver a much more satisfying experience.
Keep in mind this is the base $69,000 model. A supercharged V6 340bhp 3.0L motor good for 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. What I'm saying is that it's quick. And for those of you thinking this Jag is a Z4 clone, forget it. It's not. It's a boss.
As we sit in afternoon traffic and mess with the buttons, my brother plays the stupidest dubstep music I've ever heard called " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ". Imagine that song blasting out of the Jag in all directions as we drove through an upscale housing development on our way out of Vegas. Eventually we make it out to Red Rock Canyon, a state park with a one way road that winds around for the good part of 12 or so miles. No one was there since it was a weekday so we cranked up the music even louder.
Now picture this. You have a new Jaguar F-Type, 12 miles of one way roads that wind in and around a canyon made of 190 million year old Azetc sandstone, and out there, traffic is nil. We came to drive, but we also came to make a film, so we have to shoot the car first. We find a good spot to set the car up and capture it for ya'll. We try and narrate to the camera but realize this will be horrible to watch because we're so stiff and awkward, and car reviews are not really our deal. We decide to just soak in the experience instead and let the cameras roll.
The door handles are (hella?) flush which is cool, and they pop out with a press of the key fob. Slick. It's got a movable rear wing that reveals itself when actuated by a button in the car or by hitting highway speeds...its completely unnecessary and we couldn't figure out how it worked. Just leave it down people, it's not a Bugatti. When you press the START button in the car it gives off a great loud spike of a noise. I can imagine hearing that every single morning in the garage would get tiresome for the family, but for now it's a tasty little trumpet.
We roll out onto Scenic Loop Drive 20 minutes before they close it down. We hear park staff announcing the closure repeatedly over the PA system - to us and the coyotes. The place was empty. We blast the road. It's smooth as silk and twisty like a pretzel. The Jag shines. Once you just start staring ahead at apexes and stop pressing buttons you discover that this is a real driver's car. I laugh as my brother tries in vain to hold on to all the film equipment and point it in my general direction. This is one of those moments where life fades away and you are just happy to be where you are, doing what you are doing.
Daylight turns to twilight without us even knowing and soon its too dark to film. We stop, pack up the gear and only then do we realize we haven't eaten since we got up...16 hours ago. We find a Mexican joint, feast like Mayan kings, space out for a moment, and then hit the strip.
The night is always young when you're in Las Vegas. Once we get to the strip we realize this is again the perfect car, with it's unlimited, open air view you can take in all of this funky fresh metropolis. And it makes such a lovely noise, even when you're going slow...even more so when you're going slow. We annoy the elderly with second gear blasts from stoplight to stoplight. It's gorgeous and makes an obnoxious sound, so it fits in here perfectly.
We put the Jag to bed in the MGM parking garage, and then rapidly download footage before putting ourselves to bed as well. Tomorrow will be another epic day. We drive the Jag through a tunnel, get in a fight, meet a celebrity, and do some dirty dancing.
Stay tuned...Episode 2 is coming next Tuesday, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
