I see tons of FB and FC RX-7's on Craigslist around where I am that are affordably priced, but should I be worried about reliability? With the rotary? I've heard lots of not great RX-8 stories.

I feel like they must all be shot and completely done...

On the plus side there are like 3 moving parts in rotaries so it isn't impossible to do a rebuild. . .

The problem with rotary engined cars is that people generally do not have a clue how to maintain them. They are obviously very different beasts from piston engines but people act like they are. Once you start them, you HAVE to let them come up to full temp before you shut them off. You have to keep an eye on the oil level because they use a lot of oil in the combustion process. And if I'm not mistaken, they really need to be revved out frequently. Engines that don't get cared for properly wear out in no time and the cars become ultra cheap because owners don't know how to work on them. If you can buy a car from an owner who you can tell took really good care of the car and you are willing to learn the car yourself and take good care of it, I can't imagine why you shouldn't get one if you really like it.

The FC's were a bit hit or miss, especially if you get a Turbo II. Don't even look at one with an automatic in it, they are the death of these engines. Next, the FB's with carb'd 12As in them are quite stout. But negativity aside, GET ONE. You will not regret your trip over to the dark side.

I personally own an FD. I bought it from a guy who did not know how to take care of it. After some TLC on my end...mainly lots of oil and spark plug changes. it runs like a champ. I use it as a daily driver during the summer with light track use. I even use it for long road trips. In my opinion everyone should drive an RX7 at least once in their life. Be prepared for more often then normal maintenance (spark plug changes and what not ), a higher fuel bill and depending on what you get a rebuild of the engine at some point. That being said do not let these points bring you down. This is the most fun car I have ever driven. The best engine to work on. I have built several for friends. You will not regret owning one. The best advice I can give is do it!

Yeah. I probably wouldn't be doing that. I would probably get a beater like this.

So all bets are off, I think, when it comes to maintenance.

Whoa you make it sound so cool. Now it feels weird that I've never even driven an RX-7

Yeah a $700 rotard is absolutely going to need some work. Possibly suicide actually....Ya get what you pay for
