I finally get a chance to check out Jalopnik & Oppo today, and I find that I'm hat-tipped for NPOCP with the Mercury Cyclone wagon from last week. How awesome is that? Then, I get a reply to a post I made in June of 2013 regarding a Lustron house. Apparently someone was quite offended that I made a disparaging comment on their humble abode. Have a hot rod wagon for your troubles...

Ugh, Lustron homes are hideous. A friend of mine loves them, but I just don't get it. There are several of them around where I live. Although one just got knocked down a few months ago.

Yeah, I don't see the attraction. I'm in the Real Estate business, and see plenty of homes over the course of a year. My next door neighbor is a Lustron, although it has been completely made over by the previous owner, so you'd never know it. The current owner was quite surprised when she had some minor water damage to the interior, and the cleanup crews were faced with metal walls sheathed in drywall. What should have taken them a couple of weeks took two months of work. She was not happy. I'm not sure if she knew what the home was when she bought it.

I'm surprised to learn that this sort of cleanup would take any longer just due to metal studs. Any idea why?

Well, I'd imagine that instead of a typical wood stud wall that this crew would be expecting, they were faced with drywall placed over ceramic metal panels. These would have to be removed in order to access any damaged areas. I'd bet they had never seen such a home, as they are not common in the Toledo area where I live. I think there may be about a dozen or so in the entire city, so chances are this crew was not expecting the additional work. I'm not sure, but I would think that each panel would have to be removed, and how one does that, I'd have not the slightest clue.
I've seen a few of the less well kept Lustron homes begin to rust, as the panels get damaged and the ceramic coating is chipped off. That goes for the roof, siding and gutters. So once one area starts to rust, it just creeps along. How you'd replace/repair these panels, or the roof, would most likely be a nightmare. Some owners just re-roof the home in with wood joists & asphalt shingles. It looks weird, but is the most cost effective way, I suppose.

That makes sense. Some of them around here are really well kept, but most are not so much. Tiny houses often do not have the most caring owners.
