Tomorrow I shall drive the largest vehicle I have ever driven. It will be a stick shift that I'm not used too, and it will be windy, and the vehicle itself will probably be empty. Any tips? If you'd like to know the vehicle in question, it's big, and brown, and If'n all works out, I'll soon have a full time job of driving one around all day 5 days a week. I'm hoping my experience with the Beetle's transmission and how much of a pain in the arse it is, and how much of a pain the Beetle is in wind will help. My Z has shorter shifts then the both by a fair bit, lol. Any who, any tips? :) Have a crazy high power super charged 350Z for reading :) (how much power, I don't know, according to the Speedhunters article this came from, the motor is built to be able to hold up to 1000 hp safely)

There will be somebody in there with you, right?

I've driven some pretty huge trucks and some even bigger trailers. My one word of warning, dont force the shifts. You can get used to cars and just tossing the lever from gate to gate with the greatest of ease. On a truck, its like walking a city block... just take your time. Past that, nothing is different other than size, and you'll get used to that pretty quickly. Also, unless you are driving highway speeds, I dont think wind will be much of an issue simply because of its mass.
Good luck!

Indeed, and yes, lol, one of the driver supervisors. It's just a short drive to make sure I can actually drive, and use a stick shift. Then comes the license class, which hopefully I pass, and if so, more then likely, I get a raise :)

Highest speed will probably be 55 (only because of the main road where my building is located) and yeah, I was thinking that, and also helps with the Beetle there too, trying to force it into 2nd..well, it won't go if you force it, and if it does go, you'll hear a bit of grinding..oorrr, you'll just end up in 4th (Beetle transmissions are seriously awful, lol)

Remember, No powershifting :)
The licence class shouldn't be that hard I'd think. At least it isn't a Class A CDL. That would be hard.
Good luck!

Lol, indeed, and I think the only hard part will just be remembering the 15 extra safety rules I now get to learn ontop of the...math... 19 I already know for safety stuff, lol.

Remember its not your Z, so don't expect anything to begin with. I'd say drive it like you get to drive your dad's car for the first time. Gentle, watch your revs, try to get a feel for the clutch while still parked, and its always better to rev a little more than to stall. And the usual, be courteous but show you have determination and pay attention to your surrounding.

Everything will take a surprisingly larger amount to do than what you're used to. Acceleration times, braking distances, space to turn, overhead clearances, steering reaction, lane widths, you name it. And no one else on the road will give you that room or time, if they even think of or pay attention to you at all. The amazingly large number of clued-out drivers on the road are the biggest challenge. I remember approaching a red light and beginning my slow-down sequence in a (fully loaded) 600 gallon tank truck on a Chevy HD chassis, and some car just whipping in front of me from the adjacent lane. I don't know how they thought that might end well, though I did (barely) manage to stop it short, only because I was paying attention and planning way ahead. Just take your time and think, you'll do great!

Team work second? haha, and err, depends. They pretty much all suck, but if I get a set route it'd probably be one main truck I'd be using, though most the newer drivers are swing drivers, as in to say they jump around alot from route to route, truck to truck, weather it be other drivers vacations, being sick, etc causing the jumping around. Most of our trucks are shitty, are a few newer ones. Supposedly they're getting replaced with automatics as they break beyond repair, so for instance, if a older ones engine were to blow up, they'd probably just replace it with a new one. That said, if a new guys engine were to blow up, odds are he'd get a older guys truck, and the older guy would get a nice new one, lol

Noooooo. Save the manuals!!! I read an article somewhere about a Ups driver who had his truck for years. I can't seem to find it though.
Make sure to get a manual :)

I will no doubt, but I'd rather have a automatic, simply because I'd rather save manuals for vehicles I'd actually enjoy driving, lol. Also, the automatics are about 60000 times more quite inside the cab, lol.

A bit, lol. Funny thing is, I'm not that worried at all about tomorow, more worried about the first test at the driving school, have to have a bunch of new rules memorized (I am and have been attempting to memorize as we speak, lol) only 15 rules, but still, lol.

Same, and there all multi part things to memorize -.- got 4/5 memorized for one part..the other 10 are easier, but its just listing all ten without the paper there.. I can think of like 3 off the top of my head and thats it lol

04/30/2014 at 20:16 | 0 |
Lol, the 5 are just super hard because they are more word for word memorizing and have 4 parts to each of them...so its like, 20 things. the ten you can just say what each is, and explain it. when I look at the ten, its like, ohhh, I remember that one, and that one, why didn't I think of those while listing? lol

04/30/2014 at 20:19 | 0 |
Haha, I always mix things with similar wording up.
Low and forward or High and Backward. I'd mix them up.
Then I'd blank out on the ones that I'd actually know.

04/30/2014 at 20:26 | 0 |
Lol, I dont do that atleast :P the shitty thing is, how many of these rules are common sense/common driving rules. Things you would do naturally in most cases. Also, some of the 5 and 10 are the same. Like one of the 5 is.. make sure they see you - use your horn lights and signals -make eye to eye contact - dont gamble, use your horns lights and signals, and then one of the 10 is - Eye contact, when you dpeend on other drivers near your driving path to stay put till you are past safely, make eye contact via horn lights and signals. ..like ..why do I need to remember the same thing twice? -.-

And working in a office, you'd think wrists would go pretty fast, haha. I'll definitely have arthritis some day, and my knee will go..worse..somehow. My back will go bad at this rate, my heart..well, going off of family history, probably going to die of a heart related issue if I die a natural death.

Already am pretty buff, excited for driver legs though. Some of the drivers don't get them, but some have crazy massive legs. I've already got a muscle structure for it in my legs, just needs more muscle to fill out :P I've always been fit, but my arms make my head look small if I cross them infront of me, haha

I've also always been fit enough. The only problem is that the Lady Friend hates the elusive bicep vein that I trained for months to get :/

I need to get my thighs going, lol. I don't get veiny as much as I used to, but sometimes my arms and my legs will get super veiny, lol. Easy for me to get shots, as my veins are easy to see in my arms.

Hopefully my thighs get better soon, cus I'm not going to work outside in 85+ degree weather in pants, and I will be if driving, so it'll be short brown shorts for me, lol. Atleast I should have a nice tan though

I'm already wearing them for the morning shift, its cold cus of the wind lately but with how hard I work in my part of the building, I get warm easy..also, my legs dont get all that cold anyway. One of the drivers wears shorts all year..in winter..in Colorado.. How he doesn't get sick and die, I have no idea. In the mornig they'll start opening and leaving open all the bay doors soon for cooling, lol. And maybe, haha, they usually wave at eachother, one of my friends is a Saturday UPS driver, and he said he has raced a FedEx guy, and won, lol

Are you sure that the year round shorts guy isn't Bear Grylls? That must get seriously cold out there, Haha
It's pretty cool that you guys get the courtesy wave though. Whenever I do it to fellow A4 owners. I get a one fingered wave back :)

Wow, you injure it or? One of my brothers girlfriends has had knee surgery of sorts too already and she's in her mid twenties as well. My knees are just genetically shaped wrong, so tend to dislocate easier then a normal knee should.

The thing is a good 75% of A4 owners don't really care about their car. It's just a car. So they have no clue why I'm waving at them :P

Makes sense I guess, lol, and I just got a tip from a supervisor at work, just let the stick move itself into 2nd pretty much, actually pushing it over for second will lead to missing 2nd all together... apparently, they are a dog leg first, lol. Most drivers don't use 1st at all, but for this test, you have to.
