Hi guys! Wanting some opinions and preferences out there.

For those who have less than pristine paintwork, and those who would like a custom colour,

A) How likely Would you consider a respray in a custom colour? What colour? Is it high on the want/must do list? Is it after new Wheels, engine mods? Not wish list, but which would you do first.

B) How likely would you also spray the engine bay?

Also please post what colour you are going to and what colour you are coming from!! :)

Depends on the car, if it is relatively new and you want to keep resale up keep the color within the current offerings. If the car is past 7 years old it is up to the discretion of the owner really, custom paint can be a pain to get a hold of, even with codes there is usually a little bit of variance. I would say the paint is probably later on most peoples lists, definitely after wheels and such but probably right before engine mods that require you to take the whole thing out. To paint a car right the engine bay should also be painted properly but with people on a budget that isn't really feasible. I would really only consider a respray if I was doing a complete nut and bolt restoration. I would want to do everything properly and remove everything until just the shell remained, then paint before putting it all back together. As for colors black and white are pretty safe, a nice metallic gray or a deep blue would also look nice. I would say BMW's techno violet would really be a nice touch on certain cars too, it isn't overpowering but when the light catches the paint it is gorgeous.

I'm respraying my Spitfire from Red (faded to Tangerine with age) to Valencia Blue. It's a Triumph colour so it's not custom, but I might put a bit of pearlescent powder into the final coat to give it some depth. Don't underestimate how much work it is/how much it costs though. There's many hours of prep-work and flatting back between coats to get a good finish.

Painting the engine bay looks great if you're going for a really strong colour palette. Especially if that theme is continued elsewhere on the car. Say the valve cover/whole engine is painted in a contrasting colour, the brake calipers are painted the same colour as the engine bay. That sort of thing :)

Resale value might take a hit if it's a modern car or a classic, but I've never really paid that much attention to be honest.

Engine bay and block in white, which will make all future leaks and work in general 100x easier.

Couple it with a black exterior and if anyone asks why yell DAT'S RACISS

I've never entirely repainted my car, but I've done the front bumper twice, the right quarter panel twice and removed a key scratch down the entire right had side of my car. I drive an 11 year old economy car with over 110,000 miles. Sure, all the money I've spent on painting it is a waste, but I hate being seen as too cheap to repair my car.
