I replaced my A/C drier today on my 93 MR2, not too hard, still have to do the compressor o ring and conversion fittings, then find a shop to evac and recharge for a decent amount. Everything I've been quoted is stupid high. I've heard upwards of $400 so far. Anybody have a line on a good shop in the Baltimore Washington area that won't ask for a kidney, firstborn, and my left nut?
Have a beer for your troubles

I'd say your best bet is some local place. Where are you in Baltimore? I've had good service at Precision Tune in Timonium, but I don't know what they would charge for A/C. I'm curious what you find. One of these days I'm going to have to actually go somewhere to do A/C work. Hopefully no time soon.

I'll show myself the door... I just wanted to make a pun.
Is it possible to recharge it yourself?

Do it yourself, it's easy. You can get a air compressor powered vacuum pump from harbor freight, a cheap set of gauges, the freon, and the oil from Autozone. I've done it several times with perfect results. http://www.harborfreight.com/air-vacuum-pum…

its possible, but I'd rather get it done right and I've never done it before

i would rather get it done professionally in this case, any other car and I would probably try it.

Well if you can't find a decent shop rate, look for a youtube video that shows the process. You might change your mind when you see how easy it is.

ive seen one or two, my thing is I'm taking her with me to Spain next year and I don't want to have to be dealing with a slow leak if I bugger it up.

That makes sense, it's hard to put a price on peace of mind.

I would be dead. And really fat. And they could power a starship with my liver.

me too, but I would be so happy. Depending on how big of a file it is, I would probably, easily, hit my 250gb cap and get cut off by my ISP. And besides, your liver would do great things in the name of science! Unless of course its sold on the black market and used to fuel a smugglers ship, in which case, I dunno, I think that would be cool too. A final "Fuck you!" To the world?

yeah, I might end up doing that anyway, but it all depends. I need to get off my ass and get the conversion fittings though.

If you just have to recharge its super simple, I had to do my '91 MR2 after the a/c went kaput on a road trip back in August. I'm sure you can find a helpful video on youtube.

unfortunately I have to convert it to r134a as well. So all the compressor oil has to be replaced, the drier was replaced, and the o rings need to be replaced. Then it needs to be evacuated and recharged

I'll second this, if you like turning wrenches. The Haynes HVAC manual, gauges, oil, refrigerant, and vac pump won't set you back anywhere close to the $400 quotes you're hearing (which are pretty reasonable, just not inexpensive). I was hesitant to do mine, but no one would touch a 1978 R12 to R134a conversion, so I had no choice. Turned out to be fun and easy.

Ah, gotcha. Fortunately for me that was something the PO had taken care of.

Haha, on the other hand, the clutch had never been replaced along with the suspension components which I still need to take car of.

im on stock 93+ springs (original to the car) and kyb agx struts. I think I swallowed a filling on 295 once... Stiff as hell. New clutch though, came with the gen4.

Gen 4! Very nice! Did you get the swap done by prime performance by chance?

Yup! Almost 2 months now I think. I really want a 93 hardtop turbo though, so we shall see if I stay gen4. If I can get enough cash to have a 93 hardtop with a gen4, this one will be "Gone in 60 Seconds".

How is it compared to your old engine? I've been considering having the swap done when I can afford it; it seems like it would be a blast to drive!

to really compare it, I would have needed a stock gen2 which I didn't have. My old engine had an HKS vpc, twin spark ignition amp, mushroom filter, and exhaust, all done back in like 2004, so it was lightly modified, but at 84k when I got it, also good condition. The gen4 spools instantly, gets way better gas mileage, is much cleaner, can make up to 270-280whp depending on the intake and exhaust, but otherwise stock. I would absolutely reccomend taking your car to PR1ME, with the new ATS sweet 16 and EMU, 400whp can be done easily, with stock internals! It is such a blast to drive though, the sound is almost unreal, you can hear the turbine wheel spinning up, and it soundslike an electric actuator, no BOV so it flutters when you shift, and mine has traction issues well into third gear if I run her out to redline. I would say if you've got the cash, do it!
