I think you're the first. We've got a former A-10 mechanic, Dukie. And a few aero engineers. But I'm not aware of any helo guys.

Well anything aviation related is cool in my book.

Here's one job I could never call myself doing. One mistake and people could lose their lives. Loads of respect for the folks who do fix our aircraft, and it must be done by someone, but that someone ain't ever gonna be me.

I used to think of it in the same way. I still do to a degree, about how lives are on the line. Having friends who are crew chiefs on them it's hard not to. Think like that too much though and you'll over work yourself and your maintenance craft becomes bad. But if you read the task and aren't afraid to ask questions or for help it's easy. And at the end of the day we have quality control technical inspectors who check all our work before the aircraft can fly again. But there's nothing as cool as watching an aircraft you've repaired fly out and return from a mission.

Do you know about Planelopnik ? There is a small but vibrant subset of Oppo/Jalopnik that are aviation buffs. Myself, f86sabre, Jayhawk Jake, Shifts and Giggles, and others. I'm getting ready to do a big photo dump from the Air Power Expo at NAS Ft. Worth JRB from last weekend, once I get all the pics edited. That will show up here and at Planelopnik.

No. Didn't know about it. Glad I do now though!

Planelopnik is sorely lacking in rotary wing articles. If you have the time, I'm sure we'd all appreciate anything you could write up about what you do, pics, stories, etc.

I'll gladly chime in there! Aviation was and is my passion. Cars are just so much more approachable.

My dad was a helicopter mechanic for most of his time in the Royal Navy and did a stint in Afghanistan. He's at KAIA now as a civilian doing ops stuff. I went to visit a couple of years ago which was interesting, but left feeling glad I wasn't there for months like you guys are... Plenty of respect from me. How long before you return home?
