Kinja'd!!!

So recently a fairly clean looking '91 F150 showed up on a road I drive daily. It's got all the fundamentals I want in a vehicle: 5spd (looking to learn stick), straight body with no rust (have yet to see frame), low miles (74,000), and fuel injection. (not the truck pictured, but similar)

Guy wants $4500, which seems a very reasonable starting point.

Here's the problem:

1)I wanted to buy a car to reward myself for getting through exam week- not during it

2)I didn't initially want a truck- was looking for a saab or a miata - but I wouldn't mind it

3)I don't like the "country" image people associate with trucks

4) The guy is moving to Phoenix in a week, so take it or leave it

What do you guys think? It's not exactly what I wanted, but I feel that a truck of this vintage in this nice of shape is only going to show up thousands of miles away in Arizona. Is it worth the disadvantages, or should I hold off?

Honest feedback appreciated

Dont rush. Thats the number one rule of getting the car you want. the number 2 rule is to not rush.

Go for it! Seems like a nice deal. Not going to be many of these like it.

Don't listen to the stereotypes, Only presumptuous folks make those.

Buy what you want, not what's available right now.

If it appeals to you, buy it.

Buy it during exam week and tell yourself you can't drive it until you're done, that's your reward.

Trucks are RWD, Miatas are RWD. Miata's a stick, trucks a stick. They're almost the same, one's just more practical.

Screw the "country" image.

TAKE IT.

Offer him $3,000 3 days before he is ready to move.

Where do you live? this'll help me depict market value where you are

Try to talk him down as low as you can and if it has no issues, go for it.

5.0 V8 or 4.9 I6? 302s aren't really the best truck engines, great car engine though. Not a bad deal, but I would wait as well

Normally I'd advise you to buy it. But you're young, and that means you have young friends. And that means you'll have to help them move. This is a problem that Miata owners do not have to deal with.

I live just outside Buffalo. Which is why I'm surprised how little rust the thing has

It's the 5.0. Maybe not the best for a truck, but I figure parts are probably dirt cheap for such a common mill.

This where I'm sort of going the more I think about it. I don't think I'd actively look for an F150 , this one just happened to show up.

but it's soooo hard to find anything here for under $5k without rust.

Thinking about it, although I'm usually too soft to lowball people. but it's a possibility..

Not having rust is one of the things you want. That has to be one of the factors, and an old F150 isn't a terrible thing. I've never been a truck guy, but they are easy to work on and inexpensive to maintain so I can see the appeal.

Owner obviously took care of it then. I have a friend who lives outside of buffalo (on that island place) and all of his retired DD's turned into field cars are all due to massive, massive amounts of rot. his 92 vic had no trunk floor.

Oh yeah Grand Island! And yeah, that sort of thing is more common than you'd think. One of my friends bought an Integra a while back. Leaned on the rear bumper and it just broke right off because all the mounts were made of rot. He eventually zip tied it on, said "good enough," and drove it like that through the winter.

he is a master tech at a big ford dealer in the area and he said most cars 5 years or older have significant rot, 10 years or older and its amazing they are on the road.

Yeah, that's about spot on. Especially with Chrysler branded stuff. I swear Ram trucks start rusting on the showroom floor
