You know how every damn car review talks about soft touch plastics? I personally could care less how much soft touch plastics my cars has, in fact I'd rather my dashboard be made of metal. But alas, its no longer the 50's and my 93 land cruiser is COVERED in hard plastics.
Well you might say whats the issue? Well, there is one place where hard plastic is annoying and that is places where I rest my elbows. Hence the need for an upgrade.
In addition to having Faux granite plastic all over, my poverty center console is also is devoid of any usable cup holders, so this solution would ideally solve both.
Enter the center console from an old volvo (thank you ebay). A little dremel work and a couple of bolts and my elbow now has an acceptable throne to rest on. Now to get one of those french fry holders that go in my cup holder...

Now I just need to figure out how to add on a real arm rest to the drivers seat...

Hard plastics scratch easily, warp, fade, and crack.

after 20+ years of hard use my car has none of those problems. Still don't see the obsession.

you know, I've gotten used to it at this point, elbow on the side panel, left arm steering, right hand in lap. Im so jealous of your cloth seats though.

I'm seeing scratches and scuff marks all over that center console top.

You'd think I would be too after 8 years. But every time I drive my parents range rover I see what true comfort can be.
Yeah they are still in great shape aside from the foam in the drivers seat being a little beat down. Every now and then I toy with the idea of getting the front seats done in nice leather. But thats really low on my project list.

Yeah when my dad owned the car he had a habit of loading 2x4s into the cabin on top of that center console so he wouldn't have to tie them on the roof. I don't care what kind of plastic you use on your center console soft or hard, its going to scratch with 15 2x4s on top of it. I'm actually surprised at how good a shape its in after the abuse its taken.
I have heard of cracking plastic dash boards though in other vehicles. I think this more has to do with cheap plastic than the use of plastic itself.

I find it so odd (cool) that my My 1997 Civic Coupe has soft touch padding everywhere, My 2005 Golf's dash was way harder and uncomfortable.
Its all rubbery and cheap and soft and inviting and mmmmm

They were very into hard with this Land Cruiser, including not offering airbags.

The plastic dash on my sister's 03 Eclipse is warped, faded, and cracked. It's awful.

The Japanese loved to make their 4X4's as rough and tough as they could back in the day. Its amazing to see that my cousins 2006 Suzuki Jimny Still has incredibly rough and low rent plastics, just like the good ol' Nineties

Yeah I imagine hard plastics dashes and cheaply constructed dashes are correlated.
