1.6
Since I don't really know much 1.6 engines, and I will NOT nominate the Nissan Versa, my choice for this Best "X" Litre engine is the Ford Fiesta ST's 1.6 Turbo
This little engine is pretty much a Chihuahua dog. Small, Barky, Angry, and packing much more of an attitude than bigger engines. This 197HP and 202 lb Ft. mill is one of the main ingredients that transforms an already fun and quirky hatchback in a Grinning factory. Only drawback, sound symposer.

What do you mean X liter? Are you asking for best 1.6 or best of every size? Sorry I'm confused.

No problem. The series is called Best "X" Litre engine. The X is filled every time with a random number. Last time it was 5.0, this time its 1.6. So tell me, what is what you think is the best 1.6 litre engine?

The video looks vaguely sexual when the camera is mounted next to the exhaust and it comes in and out of the bumper when the trans shifts.

Cosworth BDA. For one, it says Cosworth, which propels it to best in class instantly. Few things say 'good engine' like 'Cosworth'. Also, it won basically every rally thing one could win. And then it was developed into all sorts of other engines which also won a lot of things. It also got developed into the engine for the RS200.

You'll start accusing me of bias pretty soon, but the Alfa 1600 Twincam from the GTA is a bit of a monster.
Equally worthy of praise is the 1600 Lotus-Ford Twincam and the Fiat Lampredi Twincam.

Only the I3 is iron. For faster warmup. And because it's cheaper. They don't say that. But it's true.

Dat Whine sound. Actually, I think this was the engine used in the GTA5 version of the Mini Cooper, when you step on it it has a supercharger whine sound. Its awesome!

That makes me want to pick up GTA5. Ahaha.
My mom has a 2006 JCW, but not the GP. It's definitely on my top 10 most fun cars I've ever driven list, and the whine on her car is spectacular. When she first got it, she thought it was turbocharged (I think they offered both at different times, so the insurance company actually told her she had a turbo... nope) and she asked me why her car sounded supercharged. I was very happy that my mom could instantly recognize the supercharger whine. +2 Jalop points for her.

From my understanding, the I3 block is cast iron for a few different reasons - the main one being that it heats up more quickly than the aluminum block (source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_EcoB…
). It would make sense that it is cheaper to produce as well. I was curious to know if the I4 was also cast iron, or if it was aluminum. An aluminum block would definitely be lighter.
I've got a crazy idea in my head that I could 3D print an I3 block, and then cast it to aluminum. Just yesterday, one of the guys in the arts department here at the University of Lethbridge was showing me a piece that he 3D printed and casted to aluminum. It was a fitting for a dust collector on a big saw. The casting was amazingly light. I think if a person used the right alloy, it could work. Still might have to put cast sleeves in it though, as the aluminum seemed quite brittle. Of course at that point it might be easier to CNC machine it, although the CNC machine they have here is only a 3 axis machine.

When you get around to the 2.0 round, I nominate the Honda K20. Either the K20Z1 from the 2005+ RSX-S or the K20Z3 from the 06-11 Civic Si.
