And wondering whether I was going to need to turn the heater on...I though of where I first heard of that trick when I was a kid. I'm surprised that stuck...but if you haven't seen it; here's Donna Dixon, John Candy, and an E32 in Speed Zone (aka Cannonball Run 3). If you haven't seen it...it's towards the end of this video.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who refers to this scene in their brain every once in awhile.

The heater trick is real, although it won't help if you've got a runaway leak or something catastrophic.

Also, as I recently discovered, if you try the heater trick and nothing but cold air blows out...SHUT IT OFF. There's nothing but vapor in the heads at that point.

Fortunately...it was under warranty. Subaru replaced the top end, no charge.

Makes a ton of sense if you've ever torn apart a heater box. Just another radiator in there.

Yeah, just a little mini radiator.

Yeah, you still need water to cool, but I've used the trick more than once. When you drive old cars in southern California, you pay attention to temps.

I once trailered a 500 lb. motorcycle on a 1000 lb. U-Haul trailer, from North Carolina to New York.

Behind a Dodge Intrepid.

Not the smartest decision I've ever made. I used the heater trick, and even went so far as to put it in Neutral and coast down the hills in Pennsylvania. That temp gauge got mighty scary at times.
