"We genuinely believe we make the best sports cars in the world," Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer of McLaren, said in an interview in Shanghai yesterday. "We need to remain very focused. McLaren is a sports car brand and that's exactly what we're going to remain."

But Lambos are ridiculous...so this still fits. McLaren is too...well "technical" for an SUV to work with the brand image

So build an SUV that can win the Dakar with a few modifications.* They did something similar with the F1.
*Probably not possible

Makes sense. May not *win* a dakar, but able to kinda race it, though. Something completely new and innovative.
Dakar race cars although with a freaking lot of tech inside them are all in pretty much the same recipe. Tubular frame, carbon fibre shell... or sometimes a car-based platform reinforced by tubes.
McLaren could make something that's a chassis that can withstand this kind of situation. Pretty much like the MP4-12c did. Kind of the same recipe: It's a road car that can race side by side with many full-on race cars built from ground up (not the top-notch, but still many). It's a race car platform inside a road car.
So, the same would be for an SUV. It may not win a Dakar race, but if you took it to a freaking desert race day you wouldn't leave completely ashamed and you could drive it home afterwards with the AC on.

Anyway, wouldn't a McLaren SUV be a Land Rover? British pride, extremely capable, and Tenneco Kinetic suspension.

I am convinced that most SUVs that car companies make are pointless, besides Land Rover and Jeep's cars very few companies make something necessary. Maybe the Volvo XC90 is useful because of the big cargo but all the unnecessary lux SUVs and terrible attempts at crossovers have me confused.
