I saw one of those while driving home yesterday. I almost got into an accident trying to figure out if it was, in fact, a Z8.

It is a pretty cool car. Materials feel more "premium" even in comparison to the newer high end BMWs.
That V8 is also glorious and this one is manual!

No doubt it's a cool car. I don't think I've ever seen on in the wild before.

Drool-worthy.

The Alpina version nice. Only downside for some is that the Alpinas are automatic.

Yea, and it didn't have the M5's V8 found in the normal Z8, it had one of Alpina's own "more refined" V8s. Still class-tastic.

There is an idea I have tucked in the back of my head... I like Z8, but it is $$$$$ to buy and keep
I like the Z4's chassis, a nice DOHC inline 6 engine, rear drive, 2-seater.
I like the fact that there is a Z4 Coupe... or at least there was. E86.
However, the bulbous front end, and odd bangle side styling isn't as timeless as cars like Z8.
There is a kit. A kit that re-bodies a Z4 as a Z8 replica.
I think you know where I am going with this...
BMW Z8 Coupe, with a modest weight chassis, and a nice atmospheric inline 6 and manual gearbox....
That would be cool. Not even the new F-Type Jag still has an I6-manual gearbox drivetrain like the old E-type did... or the Triumph GT6, or Nissan S30 Z-cars. 2-seat RWD I6 manual gearbox hatchback coupes don't really exist anymore.

some one should do that swap on a M Coupe

I was thinking Z4M coupe... but then I read they had higher maintenance costs due to solid lifters and other M-specific and expensive things... a standard Z4 3.o N52-powered coupe wouldn't be as extravagant, but would probably still be fun, and the magnesium-aluminum N52 engine is lighter weight than the iron S54 M-Coupe engine.

just don't forget to do an LS swap or 2JZGTE for some craziness!

I am not a huge fan of small-block/LS swaps into non GM vehicles, and a 2JZ-GTE into a BMW just seems like an effort to make trouble. There are turbocharged BMW I6s to be had.
And re-bodying a car like that is meant to look good on the road... nobody goes through that kind of work to risk all that effort to get destroyed on a track, and a car on the track might as well have a stock or race-prepped body, rather than a Z8 re-body for aesthetics.
An appropriately tuned up 3.oi Coupe with a Z8 re-body would likely be just fine, and plenty willing to break traffic speed limits, and be fun to drive, reliable to own, and look great.
The only thing might be to source a composite rear hatch... as the area at the back of the hatch may have to be re-shaped to fit and flow with the shapely Z8 tail and tail lights, as well as the rear fender overlays modified to suit the hatchback's shut lines.
