Garbage trucks, they don't get much love around here. Yesterday I saw a brand new one in my neighbourhood and wondered how the garbage trucks from other cities where you fellow Opponauts live.
Tell me, How does your local Garbage Truck looks like?

The ones in my neighborhood employ stealth technology. I never hear or see them and the dogs never hear or see them. Yet, by 8 am the trash is GONE.

This has to be the most elegant picture of a trash truck ever.
But that's what they look like.. I think. I never see it.

No photos, but ours are the ones that grab the cans with the big arm/claw thing and dump them into the truck.

about 10 years too old. I dont pay them much mind, the trucks, it is the asshole garbage men in my town. They might as well not even pick it up with the amount of garbage they spill. Not only that but the only thing they take their time doing is writing you a warning if your recycling bin is slightly over the top of the container, instead of just taking it. for how much we pay in this town, not only as a taxpayer on 2 properties, but we have to buy city bags (5 for $10). In the less fortunate neighborhoods they take the trash in black plastic because noone will pay for the bags. Pisses me off.

wow that sucks.
though our city doesn't even have a recycling program.
Seriously.
2014, no recycling program.
If I put out a recycling bin the garbage guys would be like...wtf is this? do I take it?

Ours are a bit odd as they are a tractor trailer set up. They have big arm which is mounted behind the cab which then lifts the garbage can up and dumps it into the trailer from the top.

no they don't do that lol.
yea we're in the "Cheap burbs" the not quite into suburbia burbs if that makes sense.
Neighboring communities (basically one more notch west from Detroit) have them.
But in Michigan we have deposit on anything carbonated. Soda cans, beer bottles etc.
That means you have to pay 10 cents on every can/bottle you take home that has carbonation. It also means if you want that money back you have to take them back to the store and stand in line like a peasant loading your dirty old cans/bottles back into a machine. Or it's a donation to the state if you don't get your money back.

except for all the signs that say "if not purchased in michigan it is illegal to turn in bottles here" Oh and I believe there is something along the lines of a sign that says 5 years in prison... blah blah blah...
I wonder if they drove that truck through "luxury lanes"

Something like this. I looked up the local waste management company's website. They have pictures of their vehicles - in 230x161 pixel size, and it seems the pictures were scanned from paper photos.

Ours are awesome, and so are the drivers/loaders. The prices are reasonable, too, and billing is all online. Once/week pickup for trash, alternating weeks for singlestream recycling (one bin for all glass, metal, paper, and plastic) and compost (nearly everything that's not recycling). Right now, that gets us down to about 2 ft^3 per week of actual landfill-bound trash for two adults and a toddler.
The trucks run on CNG, so they're not leaving big clouds of diesel exhaust every 50 feet pulling out from a dead stop at each property. They pull over to the right as far as possible and wave people by so as not to hold up traffic. All the trucks have robo-arms for picking up the bins, keeping fuel and labor costs as low as possible. This also makes for quick pickup routes through the neighborhood, keeping noise and traffic down. Every truck has a rake and shovel, and I've seen the drivers use them to clean up anything that falls out. When we have windstorms (always on recycling day with the paper, too...), you put a rock on top of the bin and the drivers know how to use the robo-arm to bump the bin, dislodging the rock, and then do the pickup. In 13 years at our house, I think I've found dropped items from service maybe 3 times.
Service includes year round pickup on compost days for bundled tree limbs and brush (up to three bundles 2' diameter by 4' long). Christmas tree pickup is free. If you demolish a bunch of failing concrete to replace a porch, and dispose of it by filling your trash can with it (hypothetically, of course), the truck can still lift the can and you don't get billed extra.
When I used to deliver auto parts, one of their truck/maintenance depots was on my route. They meticulously service the trucks. Their techs were unfailingly polite, professional, and friendly. We never had a billing or core problem with them. Their maintenance shop could hold about 8 full size trucks, and it was spotless. The inside of the trucks was pressure washed routinely, so it never smelled, either. No, I don't work for them. But, if I had to get a quick temp job to fill an employment gap, I'd definitely apply with them.

no, i put it all into a giant black trash bag just before going so its never in the car for more than 5 minutes. I havn't had any leaks yet, so no stains. I just load it up and take off asap.

The new one's in my area are so quiet, I have missed putting out the trash. I have a blind coon on my street that will trash your trash at the most inconvenient time. I have too many retiree's at home all the time to shoot the damn'd thing,

Don't take them to a large grocery or a store like Meijer, if you were planning on cashing them in. The large stores us a barcode reader that tells whether the can or bottle was sold in Michigan.

Do you see those two boxes up front? You need a rfid key to open it, and you dump your (sorted) garbage into it. It actually works pretty well as you ensure that only those who should are able to despose of garbage in the containers and they fit more than the standard containers. An added bonus is the added safety. Wild life is kept out and heavy winds wont make the garbage and the containers fly around possibly damaging property during storms or heavy weather. My apartment block has one and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

Thanks for the info! That is really cool, and we need those here, badly. We get frequent windstorms, there are a lot of pirate disposers (late night home trash dropoff in commercial dumpsters), and a lot of bear and raccoon activity.
