You've just reminded me of Grolsch Herfst Bok. I'll be sending a guy over to The Nederlands in the autumn (as the name suggests its an autumnal beer, translate, 'autumn buck') to bring a few bottles back as its a fantastic fruity beer.

I just got back from Aruba, and while Grolsch isn't available on the island (crazy!), the Amstel Bright is downright dangerous when chilled on ice and enjoyed on the beach. A case of splits can easily be done by lunchtime....

When I lived in The Nederlands it was all about Amstel. So many drinking little 'Amsterdammers' (like two mouths full if that). I always drank the half litres and had to keep pointing out 'hey I'm British, fill the glass up don't give me that inch and a half of foam on top', invariably I'd get replied to with 'that's the best part', so I'd tell them 'give me the beer and you keep the head'. I finally found a bar that did Guinness Export as nowhere near where I lived did Guinness that didn't cost the earth. Of course I then found Grolsch Herfst Bok at Super de Boer (supermarket) and I was in love.

I remember my dad would kick back after work and enjoy one of these when I was younger. Anyways, I remember he would wash them out with soap, and give me a bottle so I could keep my marbles in it. I thought those lids were the coolest things ever when I was younger. I still think they are somewhat cool. Awwww nostalgia.

I have never been fond of head on beer, and it seems to be an epidemic in The Netherlands.. I too have had those conversations throughout my time there (and Germany and Austria) and been looked at like an alien for not wanting all that foam. I also lived in England for a while, a small town called Knutsford in Cheshire County, and every pub I frequented there filled the pint glass (20oz) to the brim... You couldn't even lift it to your mouth for the first swill, you had to lean over and vacuum it out, and as a Dutch native (read: cheap), that's good value! Thankfully it's much the same here in Canada too...

The old Grolsch bottles had porcelain flip caps. The modern ones have plastic flip caps. I also save the bottles for things like home made BBQ sauce and salad dressing etc., but the plastic topped ones are great to use as salt and pepper shakers for backyard entertaining as you can easily drill tiny holes through the plastic flip-top. In fact, at Christmas time, you can buy "limited edition" 1.5 liter flip-top bottle of Grolsch. They're a little big to use for anything like that, but are cool nonetheless... I have a collection of them.

I remember shattering one of the porcelain flip caps when I was little, that was a sad day. But that is actually a really great idea. I wish more bottles had this sort of flip cap.

Rubbish it most certainly is... If I wanted foam, I'd order a pint of foam . If I wanted a lager with foam, I'd order a lager with foam . I ordered a pint of lager , so please pour me a pint of lager ... Proper like....

You're sending someone here just for a few bottles of beer? Are there no shops willing to mail a few crates?

I know a couple of truck drivers that are often in the south of The Nederlands (one of them is there every other day either picking up or dropping off a trailer). The cost one place in The Nederlands wanted to charge me for shipping was unreal, nearly twice the price of the actual beer as it would have to come by land as there as a further charge to send a pressurised glass bottle by air (not sure if they were making it up) but I kindly siad I'd think about it and never phoned back.

Haha... I did spend a couple of years there and one of my best friends is from Cork, so I suppose some of the lingo rubs off on me..
