Wheel bearing failing at 27k?

My lovely 2013 Mini Cooper is starting to show its age in a rather interesting way. Aside from triggering a CBS (Condition Based Service) indicator at 25k, or about 5k early than the schedule says, the left rear wheel bearing has started screeching.

Anyone else in R56-land had similar experiences?

Wheel bearings, in my experience, have lasted till at least 150k on every other car (read: Saab x 20, Volvo x 1, Honda x 1, Nissan x 1) I've had. Disappointed.

I think my Benz is still on its original front wheel bearings at 350,000 miles, though they're wear-wise not going to survive another greasing - the adjustment's all taken up. Land-Rover bearings (my other operational car) will show close to zero wear to 300k with greasing *if* you don't take them swimming. Water displacement of oil/grease or rust is about the only way you kill them.

My Kia fried all four wheel bearings, some of them repeatedly, and all before 130k miles.

Do you do a lot of autocrossing or something?

Left rear wheel bearing went out on my GTI at ~30k. Just shit luck sometimes.

2 things -

1) My Mini (a 2005 R53) needed new wheel bearings pretty early on. It sucks, but it's not unheard of.

2) If you're waiting for the light to come on, you're waiting too long. If you want the car to last a long time, use the "old school maintenance schedule" that BMW used to recommend back before they started doing "free service for 50K miles". Google knows where to find it.

I wish I had the time, but no, I do not.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll go hunting for that maintenance schedule.

Hey, it happens. A friend had to replace his wheel bearings on his new accord at 20k miles. As long as its covered under warranty, just get it done and be on your way. No point mulling over it.

27 thousand? That's pretty low indeed. Mine took 18 years to start knocking, swapped them just a few months ago:

I don't think I've ever needed a wheel bearing replaced in my life. My BMW has 165k miles, I bet it's the original bearings too.

So the CBS indicator came on as a result of the dealer setting an annual reminder in my birth month for New Hampshire state vehicle inspection. The noise did not happen this morning when I drove the car to the dealership, nor when the technician drove it. I'm under advisement to bring the car back in if the noise happens again. Wiper blades got replaced under warranty.

I got to sit in the new F56 Mini they had in the showroom... unimpressed.
