First off, I love the new sub-blog with all of the F1 stuff, and secondly, you seem like someone who could answer a question I've always had about car design.

Why did the older cars have such a forward seating position? I know they have moved it back over the years for safety reasons by getting their legs behind the wheels-ish and keeping them out of the crash structure, but what was the advantage to having them so far forwards in the past?

Love how he's looking at the wall. "say, does that red look a little off to you?"

weight distribution, I'd assume.

If the engine is the heaviest thing, and the gearbox at the rear is balancing out the driver at the front, then you would want a driver in that position at the front to best balance out the gearbox.

I guess that makes sense.

I wonder if it'd be more important to get the weight distribution right or reduce weight... like if they were given the option of dropping 5lbs, but it was from the wrong end, would they do it?
