Fellow Opponauts what you have before your very eyes are the 2 Mattel co-developed new Beetle special editions of Barbie and Hotwheels, exclusive to Mexico.
Barbie Edition
Ladies first, so lets start with the Barbie Edition. Although you may consider it ridiculous this is one of the rarest editions of any car yet. Only 13 have been produced in 2006 and bought by car collectors that know the rarity and value that these things will reach. The changes that make this Beetle, the Barbie edition, is of coarse the pink paint, the rim locks also have a pink surround. There are Barbie decals in the sides and in the rear, though they are subtle and inoffensive. Step inside, and the seats are two tone pink and black. The steering wheel has a pink tab in the bottom spoke, was well as the side plastic panels. Another nice detail is the pink surrounding of the floor mats.
The technical stuff is not that special, as it packs the 2.0 115 hp engine that has been fitted on VW since the stone soup was invented with a 6 speed Tiptronic as the only transmission choice.
As you probably guessed, finding a used one is pretty impossible. These cars are taken to shows around the country, and are very well respected around here. Their owners, who paid the $24,000 price when new, have real affection towards them. I really like these beetles, and given a chance to buy it I certainly would.
Best part of it all. I have seen 1 in the road in the city of Monterrey driven by a guy.
It was simply EPIC.
Hotwheels Edition
This edition came to be in 2008 to commemorate Hotwheels 40th Anniversary, and the Beetles 10th anniversary. Together they created this "Toy for big Boys" as it was advertised in a series of funny print ads of grown males clinging to its rims with their wives pulling them as if they were little kids. Clever.
Though it was also a very special edition with nice details, it wasn't nearly as rare or hard to find in the used market as the Barbie. The additions included Salsa Red painted side mirrors, 17 inch Salsa red exclusive wheels, tastefully discrete Hotwheels decals on sides and back, and 3 available colours: Laser blue (94 Units) Salsa Red (73 Units) and Onix Black (73 Units) to total out at 240.
In the inside, as in true retro car tradition, there are painted-like-exterior interior coloured panels. You will also find the same design of the seats as the Barbie, though the pink is changed for salsa red. Engraved Hotwheels logo in the headrest, aluminium pedals, red stitching in steering wheel, seats, handbrake, floor mats, and red leather in the steering wheel rim, and the passenger side handle. Also, the all important interior plaque that denominates this as the Hotwheels and its number. All in it would've cost you $24,000 and in the used market they are hitting $11-13K.
This beetle though was powered by a much healthier 2.5 5 Cil. producing 150hp and could be picked with a 5 speed manual or the 6 speed Tiptronic.
Both of these cars were solely for the Mexican market, and I am very happy for this since they really are unique and how a true "Special Edition" should be.
