So, the wagon-SUV is already a thing. But everyone with a brain can agree that a minivan, with its more aerodynamic shape and sliding rear doors is better for daily transporting children/pets/groceries/soccer teams/etc. So, why hasn't some enterprising auto manufacturer simply combined the two? I know there is the Mazda 5. But that seems more like just a lowered minivan (which I'm totally fine with) and that clearly doesn't seem to have captured the market. No what they need is a crossover with sliding doors.
Just take this...
And make those rear doors slide open. Create some fancy marketing to convince everyone how cool they'll be if they buy it and watch the cash fly in.

Its probably the Idea that minivans are lame, minivans have sliding doors, so anything with sliding doors would become lame

It's been done at least once before. The Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear, seen here in Super Exceed trim.
Based on the chassis of the Pajero, it has all the minivan features with low and high gear ratios plus locking diffs.

This is exactly right.
In this modern world, people tend to care more about ideas than what actually works.

Not big enough inside. An Mdx wouldn't be more or less convenient with sliding doors.

I didn't mean the MDX, specifically. And everything is more convenient with sliding doors!

I'd argue a car like a BMW X5 is a minivan as well. A tall one with some offroad capabilities, but a minivan at hart. As are all other CUVs. The only reason we differentiate between these tall people carriers designed for football practice and highway use is due to marketing. People might perceive them differently, their intent is the same. Whether they've got sliding doors or not doesn't matter at all.

Sliding doors are way better though.

A Flex with sliding doors would be interesting, but I don't think it would sell any better than it does now.

Sure, but many people prefer form over function. Why buy a Dodge Durango if you can buy a Dodge Caravan? Similar size, same brand and both were designed for parking lots of shopping malls and football practice. The only real difference is the pretentiousness of the Durango compared to the much more honest Caravan. The Durango is a minivan in disguise, with reduced practicality and an increased price as a result.

I believe the original Mazda MPV meets your criteria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_mpv

I have an X5, and occasionally rent minivans when I travel. In the X5's defense I'll point out that compared to something like a Grand Caravan, it has better handling, better accelleration, better visibility, better fuel economy (diesel), and is way more fun to drive. The X5 is also really wide and hard to get in when parked in the garage and would be better with sliding doors.
