I could probably go higher, but I won't. I have a Noctua cooler, ASRock Extreme3 Z77 mobo, and an i7-3770K processor. Seems to be running nicely.

You're using an aftermarket cooler, everyone knows naturally aspirated is best.

I'm lazy and just cranked the turbo-boost function up on mine, 4.4GHz dropping to 4.2GHz at fully load. 4.4GHz tends to crash the PC, which is less than desirable.

You could easily go higher. My i5-4670k is at 4.2Ghz with a Noctua cooler inside a mini-ITX case. Your Ivy Bridge runs cooler than the Haswell and probably has more airflow.
Then again, if you're gaming, anything over 4Ghz really isn't going to net a noticeable increase. At that point it'd just make for higher benchmark shinies.
