Does anybody have tips for scraping off 35ish year old gaskets? It is a REAL pain -_-

Also, the engine only has about 30,000 miles on it, should I get new rings anyway?

Couldn't hurt could it? Better do it right the first time around then having to pull apart the engine again.

I'd say it depends on how much compression you're getting with it.

If time and money are no importance, I would re-ring it, put in new bearings, and have the block checked and honed at a machine shop.

If they ARE, then just grind off the gaskets and slap it back together. Use a die grinder with a soft abrasive disc meant for aluminium for the least amount of work with the most amount of success. Just make sure to block off the passages not to get any gasket material stuck down in there.

On an unrelated note, could you post pictures of the car?

I'd say yes, just because you already have it out. Might as well check out the condition of the crankshaft and replace bearings too. Use a die grinder with a roloc disc to take off the gaskets. How's the crosshatch look?

Couple things:

1.) Brakleen, a big pack of razor blades, gloves, and a 12 pack to get the gaskets off. It is a bitch but it's gotta be clean.

2.) Can you still see the crosshatch on the cylinder walls?

3.) What pistons are those? If they are cast stockers I'd either run it as it is if you have a tight budget or replace them if you can pay up. I dunno about a Ford like this but in a SBC you don't always need the valve reliefs or the dish.

I WOULD, however, replace the oil pump and pickup since I'm in there.

No rings this time, but new rod bearings, all new gaskets, cleaned and lubed the cam, new lifters (from another build), and tomorrow we're honing the cylinders. We only have a wire wheel with steel wires, but it seemed to do the trick! Thank you!

Bonus- I have a pretty big honer right now:

1) Wire wheel brush seemed to do it. Surfaces look a-okay now.

2) Nope, super clean, no gouges, but we're honing it tomorrow

3) Stock I believe, I've seen 'em before in worse engines and they've run alright.

4) Picked up a new pump and cleaned the pick up with a LOT of part cleaner.

Thanks!

That was one thing we shoulda checked for, but the engine was in 21 pieces by the time we thought of it.

Bearings are being replaced, cam and crank look good! There's no crosshatch, but we're honing it tomorrow

Rings are okay, but we did a couple other things like bearings and such too

Fuck yes. Hone the bores too. New ring technology FTW! That shit is 44 years old!
