Did not know that the engine in this was SOHC. I thought it was dual. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though. I read somewhere that 80% of the parts are similar to those of the Le Mans racers of the late 80s. They made DOHC versions of those cars but the drivers preferred the SOHC versions of the engines, cause the DOHC versions became too top heavy.

There were a surprising number of cars that went SOHC, and some of that I believe was due to IMSA GTP regs that allowed larger displacement and lower weight by the number of cams you had.

I think.

GTP regs are weird to me, with the displacement/cams/valves/turbo vs na/weight formula, so it's really fuzzy to me. But I think I remember this being the reason.

I have literally never heard of this car before.

Did the XJR-8/9 race in GTP? I thought it was only over seas that it saw action.

They were all part of a family that began with Group 44's XJR-5 in IMSA, and that car was set up with IMSA regs in mind. I think that, being generally happy with the performance, Jaguar just kept going with what was working for their WSC cars, just making minor regulatory changes as needed.

Oh okay, I remember those cars. Saw an XJR-5 last year, sounded awesome! I don't think the XJR 9 needed more power though, it was at 750hp, with SOHC. It was one of the more powerful cars of the bunch. Even more powerful than the 5L twin turbo Sauber C9.

And they were fuel efficient enough for WSC, which had some pretty stringent regs.

I was watching the Daytona 24 from 91 or 92, and there was a 2-4 year old Jaguar racing as a privateer, and the announcers would always bring up how it was a threat to win the race. Then, when all the brand new and unreliable cars started dropping out, it really showed why the 7L V-12 Jags had the staying power they did. Just some well built and sorted machines.

I've seen someone that fitted AJ6 DOHC heads to a supercharged Jaguar V12 to go into a hotrod. Bloody impressive, but the result was an absolutely colossal engine.

I can see why they kept it SOHC. It's not as if they were lacking for power...

Funny how an unreliable road going engine can be changed into a reliable race engine.

The owner was talking about the engine management system and how you can tweak it here and there and in the end instead of a 450hp engine you can get upwards of 600hp. It is after-all the engine out of the XJR8 and XJR9. So yes, more power really isn't needed.

Also, I need pics of this DOHC engine. I must see how massive it is.

...I want that in an XJS. Damn the fuel costs, I want that.

I'm away from my home computer at the moment, but shall find them when I get back :)

Ehh, the most you'd need it for would have been about 5000km+/-, and anything making it that far would be considered pretty reliable.

Which would be a little over 2 months if I DD'd the thing.
