Covered headlight conversion. They opened up the headlights in 1967

The parking lights and rear lights were also changed with the introduction of the series 2 to meet US regulations. The grill opening is also a lot bigger to try to keep the new emissions-regulated engine cooler.
So yeah, I blame the US for ruining a lot of the pretty British sports cars.
I thought at first that was just a S1 bonnet, but nope. Still has the lights and the larger opening. However, it's missing the front side marker light.
Not bad changes, just interesting.

There are two theories for the open headlights, both equally plausible. One is the mentioned americanization, the other is trouble with condensation inside the covers which caused all kinds of corrosion related problems. British construction quality being what it is, I'm quite sure it was a combination of the two. I do imagine Malcolm Sayer having quite the fit.

A guy I used to work with has one. 6 in it. No mods other than the radio ( in the 80s). He brought it one day insted of the Viper ( decisions, decisions I know). I was found drooling over it in the lot. He took me for a spirited ride in the country. With the door being 2 inches tall, and the windshield ending near my belly button, I at least got comfort from the old hook seat belts, and single nut, knockoff wire wheels.
And I would do it again and again, and again, in a heartbeat....

The first exposed lamp with the series 1.5 was raised and moved forward.. They went higher and further forward with the S2 where they remained for the rest of production.
This is the first time I have hear the condensation theory. Then again, I wasn't aware that those side markers I pointed out were only for the US models until I cracked open my E-Type restoration guide a minute ago, so I could be wrong. :)
Interesting though, about the side marker.. Makes me wonder if the car was imported from Europe. If so, it came with the higher compression ratio and triple SUs the rest of the world got with the S2.
