This thing has been on the 'Bay for a couple weeks now...and I look at it every day. It's the only one like it I've ever seen - only W221 I've ever seen with the 4 seat interior, and the only 65 I've seen in Jade Green...one of only a few W221s I've ever seen in that color. Also that interior is nice. Would like to swap out the wood/leather steering wheel for all-leather, but other than that it's perfect. Mileage is a non-factor, these things have been bulletproof.
If things go well in the next couple months and it's still there....having some dirty thoughts.....
No one buy it please? Thanks.

If you do get it, keep the wood wheel, it will wear better.

Hey! That's local! And an awesome color combo... Damn. Check the Collectors Car Gallery's website too. Sometimes they price things more competitively on their own site.

That's one of those cars you keep for a little while then sell before it gets too expensive. I can't imagine the costs of keeping that going for a few years.

And the sound...and the massage seats...and I hear they go around corners a lot better than you expect. Also the brakes are insane.

The biggest maintenance cost is the brakes, after a period of time the ABC might need servicing, but if you get the parts yourself and know a good guy, it's not as bad as you'd think. These things don't break nearly like the W220 did.

You're not crazy.
An F355 would be crazy. Same price but more expensive to own.
You should totally get an F355 ;)

hmm I've never seen a 221 with the 4 seat package. I'd be a little disappointed with the lack of heat/cool + memory rear seats that a lot of other cars have even without the 4 seat pkg.. It looks like they are absent from this car.. I don't see the buttons for them on the door.

Wow really? I should do that. 41 is already the cheapest W221 S65 in the US as far as I can tell. Wonder if they'd go under 40....
Definitely an awesome color combo. Nice thing is too, such eye-popping color combos are hard to sell because most people want white/grey/silver/black with black interiors so between the mileage and the color, you get a discount.

Yup. Not always, but I was looking at a 3.0CS that sold a little while ago. It was on eBay too, and it was $3,000-ish less on their website if I remember correctly.

I go back and forth...the new one is stunning, the W220 is classic...but in person these are always impressive. And as an AMG they look very sharp. I prefer the facelift models but I'm not exactly in a position to buy a six figure car and won't be any time soon likely haha

Good point. I don't like the way it looks but it definitely will wear better. One thing I'm shocked at is how good the leather has worn. Seems like it has almost never been sat in. The Designo leather must be on another level.

110k miles in a runaway point for me. Maintenance is expensive, especially parts. You can only diy so much on a w221 without expensive equipment. I'm on my second w221, when I say it's reliable it's all relative.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

04/25/2014 at 21:42 | 1 |
I don't know if bullet-proof is the right word. Back in the days of the W126, yes, the S-class was bullet-proof. But today, although well-made, these cars are hysterically over-engineered. Combine that with the mileage and I can tell you two things:
1) A mechanical/electronic failure is not an "if," but a "when".
2) You have basically found the most expensive car to work on this side of a Bugatti Veyron. There's a reason in lost 80% of its value in 7 years.
Still, I feel your pain. That is a phenomenal, beautiful, amazing, fast, and supremely luxurious. If I could buy one someday, I would. But I'd wait and save up until I could both afford to buy one with a third that many miles or less, and could afford the maintenance.

Well the idea would be once I can afford it, that includes maintenance. Electric problems have been rare on these, I've been a religious member of MBWorld for a while now (don't tell any of my BMW friends :P) and it seems like they have a decent track record. You're right though, they are probably one of the most expensive cars to work on short of a true exotic. Somewhat scary.

Oh I see what you mean. I am pretty sure that they are also heated/cooled, although I believe some of the buttons are moved to the center console now since there is no middle seat. I read about it once somewhere but don't remember specifics. Sorry I misunderstood your original statement.

Understandable. I used to love those too. When I was a teenager, a buddy's dad had a W140 S500 in that weird almost pink-silver color and it was loaded. Loved that thing, even though it was just a big brick. Think he still had it up till a few years ago. The damn thing never broke and was absolutely silent inside. Just a big leather-lined bank vault with a V8.

It's gotta be one of the coolest cars I've ever seen...and 150 hp? In that thing, that's all you need. I had no idea you could get that much power out of that engine. Would love to meet the guy who built that.

I currently have a '12 s550, my previous one was a '10, and I might be getting a '15 soon. They're plush, and quick, and feel like tanks on the road. It's the only car where you have more energy after the drive then before. They are expensive* maintain, but they're 100k cars so percentage wise compared to a lesser car it's about the same. My service 2 was around $900 if you're wondering, and oil changes are around $160.

Yeah I've heard that. Basically so long as you get the belt service done you should be in business, they seem to be somewhat reliable apart from that :p

Alright, good to know. Interesting what you say - you have more energy after the drive than before. I've heard similar statements made before. How many miles is service 2 after? Can't remember. I feel like so long as you catch problems before they get out of hand, you protect yourself. Also, aftermarket warranties can still be written for these, just found out. That's probably the way to go.

Service 2 is 2 years (in my case), or 2nd oil change (I think). The first day I got my '12 I damaged the door and had to have it painted, 2 years later it developed an electrical short from the door being assembled incorrectly. I hate to have been stuck with the bill, (body shop paid for it). I don't know if a aftermarket warranty would have covered that ( I doubt it because my original Mercedes warranty didn't). It's by far the most relaxing drive ever, I keep the throttle sensitivity on E and suspension on sport, makes for a great highway cruiser. I don't see how the seats can possibly be more comfortable after adjusting them correctly (the massage seats are worth every penny). The car is whisper quiet and smooth, yet still you don't get a disconnected feeling to the road. It makes 3 hour drives feel like running to the grocery store. You really have to drive one, but if you're buying used, get the Non Amg's. They're much less likely to be abused, and tire changes every oil change get expensive.
