This is related, since both the jobs I would/could get over the summer are automotive-related.

Choice 1: Grunt work at a VW dealer

I don't know the exact title, but an entry-level position is a possibility since both my parents bought their VW's from the same guy, and I'm friend's with his son. Yes, it is a job "Through a connection" but hey, why not? best guess for pay would be $10-$11 an hour, and I'd be washing/moving VeeDubs/Scubaroos all day

Choice 2: Tech at Jiffy Lube

Again, I know a guy! A friend of mine works at a jiffy lube, and says they're short on staff. he says that they're not having luck hiring, and he offered me the job. No experience is necessary, since I don't have any. Pay is about the same as the VW gig.

Honestly, I'd do jiffy lube just to get the experience to work on cars. the VW job would be better, and might allow career progression, but the JL job would open doors to buying/repairing cars as a side-job/hobby

So, what do you guys think is the better option?

Have a sweet little abarth

I'd go VW dealer. That's just me, though.

The VW dealership. Before my mom bought her BMW I told her to ask the salesman if I could get a job there. I did (good negotiating, huh?) I ended up being a detailer. Working around a dealership is always interesting. It might be stressful and you WILL work long hours and holidays, but I didn't care.

I would go with the VW dealership. While it might me grunt work, it's more marketable in the long run. Saying that you worked at a real dealership looks better than saying you worked at Jiffy Lube, which could help you score a better job in the long run. There's also probably more room for upward movement at the dealership.

Having worked at a 15min oil change place for a summer, I'd pick the VW dealership by a long shot. Working at a place like Jiffy Lube FUCKING SUCKS: you're filthy 24/7, you get burned at least once a day by random catalytic converter you didn't know about, you're always hot because of the radiating heat from the exhaust, and you're constantly exhausted. I swear after an 8-5 shift, I'd come home and pass out at 7 pm. It was hell.

For some reason, I am recalling you being in college. If so, you should probably try to wrangle yourself into a relevant internship or research position. If not, dealership.
