"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

One of the cars I've been looking at in the search for my first car is the Volvo S80 T6. I know, I know. Automatic transmission, front wheel drive, no wagon, not diesel, and no styling to speak of. But, in reality and practicality, this seems like the perfect car for me. I like it because it's fast, comfy, and has lots of toys. Plus, it is a total sleeper. My parents like it because it is safer than staying home, it is reasonable on gas, probably reasonable on insurance, and it won't make every kid in a V6 Mustang at my school want to race (fortunately for them, because they'd loose). And the price for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , with just 70,000 miles and the rare-ish tan interior, seems reasonable, at just $5500. However, whenever I see a NPoCP listing on here, it is, for example, an old Miata with 50k miles. The Craigslist seller will be asking $4000, and I will think, "yeah, that's reasonable." Then dozens of you will come along and say that you would be a moron to pay more than $1200 for the car, and I'm left a) wondering what don't I know about car values, and b) wishing some of you would come down and negotiate on my behalf. So, what's the verdict on this Volvo. Is its price ok? Or should I offer him $2500 for it and walk if he asks for $5k?
Also, on a side note, my mom doesn't like Volvos, because her friend with a high-mileage XC70 complains about repair costs, and now my mom thinks owning a Volvo is as expensive as owning a pet killer whale. Is she right?

I actually just got off the phone with Seaworld pet killer whales are rather cheap to maintain.

The S80, at any price point, is crack pipe. You'll be replacing that transmission soon. Most S80s have trannies that go around the 100k mile mark.

5500 for a 12 year old car, probably is a little high.
Repairs are going to be inevitable, but make sure the service records are complete for everything a 70k or 12 year old should have, bushings, belts, hoses etc. Mileage isn't the only thing in play here.
Repairs on some things will be a little pricey, mostly because Volvos are not super common and they don't really share a platform or a parts bin.
If it is in perfect condition: $5k NP, 5,5 is pushing it.

Good. Let me go measure out my garage to see if one will fit.

I'll have to look into that. Thank you for the warning.

I heard you can get a good fish tank at WalMart for those puppies. One whale power beats 100hp any day

See, that's the bit that leaves me wondering.
The only examples of this car I can find for $5k or under have at least 120,000 miles one them. Most of them have over 150,000. There are only a few others with mileage this low, and they are all between $7/8k. This one is, by far, the best mileage/price ratio I can find, and you (and a few others) have told me it's still to expensive. What gives?

I actually have a tank, but I'm not sure a whale will get along with my current "little guy".

Mileage doesn't negate age on non-collector cars. Rubber things and fluids for example are going to have the same issues more or less with 30,000 or 130,000 if not replaced. Throw in something as prone to failure on a 12 year old car as a turbo and it gets even sketchier.
5,5 isn't CP, but I do think it is a little too high.
Also, about 70k is generally about the time a lot of service is required.
In the next 20-30k miles you will likely need to replace air filter, cabin filter, timing belt, and spark plugs. Probably bushings, maybe some cracked hoses just from age alone.
If it was a 7 year old car with 70k NP all day, even a bit higher in price.
I'd say go check it out. Look at paint for chips that will rust soon. Anything rubber you can see, check for cracking or uneven wearing.
Check the tires, you might be getting close to replacement but my guess is the dealer swapped them.
In the picture, the air dam looks damaged, try to find out why. Did they previous owner bottom out, was there a low speed impact (In which case the bumper probably needs to be replaced as they crack on the INSIDE even when the bumper looks OK.
Also research the car and its common problems. Turbos are high failure on any car, Volvo from what I gather had some bad batches too.

They may have had transmission problems. Be extra judgmental of that transmission on your drive. Dog it a bit, then drive like your grandmother, then dog it some more. Any odd shifting, thunking, uncomfortable whining?
All that said, $5,500 is right at the most I would consider OK for that car. Not a bad price, just not quite a great price IMO.
Also, watch out for stuff like this. My money says it was flogged and neglected:

Between the messed up front, swapped hood and scratched rims...
This might be a steal:

Thanks, that clears up a lot.
My budget is 8, but if I can spend less than that, I will.
As far as this S80 goes, I won't be driving it unless it makes it to the top 2 or 3 on my list when I go to pull the trigger, due to it being far away. However, I will take your advice on transmission testing if I find one closer to me.
I agree, mileage isn't the only factor on a car that old. I just found and '02 Trooper Ltd. here in town. It has 130k miles, but from the first once-over walk around I gave it, it looked like it was the owner's baby. I'm gonna take it for a drive tomorrow, and if that goes well, I'll take it to a trusted mechanic friend and have it checked out. I could probably get that truck for under $5000. In a case like that, I'd rather have a care that's led an easy life for 130k miles than a car that's been neglected for 70k miles.

Try to get For Sweden on the line, he drives one or has been driving one for a couple of years. Maybe a "Repost for the morning crowd" or something.
