Back east we used to have a guy do this too, He would go through looking for cans and things with a deposit on them and then drive one state over and collect the deposit. He actually got arrested for it.

My mom's trash service has 1 day a year when they will take nearly anything, except tires/paint etc. It's fun to sit and watch people come around with trailers loading stuff up and hauling it off.
