Got the new head gasket and intake manifold gasket in today, got the mating surfaces prepped and cleaned up the head a bit. Was getting ready to throw everything back on and figured I'd go ahead and get the crank pulley off now while there's more room in anticipation of needing to time the motor, broke my strap wrench, chain wrench won't fit, it's an automatic so I can't put it in gear and use that, crank pulley bolt has yet to budge. Giving up and eating a sammich, sometimes I hate this car.

put a breaker bar on the nut, rotate it so the breaker bar is againt a block of wood or the ground and tap the starter. Make sure it is facing the correct way though!

I'd forgotten about that method, I'll throw the battery on the charger and do that if I don't get it figured out otherwise by the time it's charged.

especially with the starter not running against compression it should break right free. Get some ATF on the bolt and tap a few times with a hammer too on the bolt face before removal to get that ATF into the threads

yup! These and 2JZ crank pulley bolts are impossible

I just realized I have no idea which way the rotation of this engine is, might want to figure that out before I try that method.

Still easier than the one on my RX8 ;)

it's clockwise so it should work (looking at the crank pulley). Standard thread rotation too

are those bad also?

Looks like you need to repaint your pistons. Maybe plastidip 'em?

What a brilliant method. Must remember this in future.

I should remark that impact wrenches are always great if one can fit them. Dang radiators.

only a right angle will fit in there on a 240 IIRC. And getting enough torque out of an angle impact usually won't cut it. I think it is the radiator support in the way on these. Been a while though!

I think most of the time that we worked on diesel 240-series Volvos, we had the engine out of the car for anything crank bolt related - not that we pulled the engine just to remove anything, just did everything with the rebuild before they went back in. The six doesn't leave a lot of room, to be sure, and now that you mention it, they do have a high radiator support with I think sort of a center rib thing.

that is a big heavy lump to haul out of there on a whim, I am sure it was always a good reason. What was the t-belt interval on those? 50K maybe?

Possibly longer. I don't really recall, other than to say I don't think pulling the crank bolt was in any way a regular thing.

not at all. Even on the D20T's I know you could do the t-belt without pulling the pulley. I would assume the 24's were the same way

they use red locktite from the factory, supposedly it's ~600ft/lb to break them loose the first time. All I know is that I broke a breaker bar and have a dent in my fender from the first time I got it off.

fuuuuuu! Damage :( That red factory stuff was on the 2JZ's eventually turns pink/white/rust. Crap, add that to the super stuck crank pulley bolt list
