So heres the deal... one of my friends is moving to Philly in the near future and he wants a small cheap beater that gets good MPG.

Here are the basic requirements

-Reliable

-Good MPG

-Cheap

-Won't get stolen in 5 minutes

-Automatic

-Decent interior room, he's 6ft 7in

So lets see what you can come up with... I'll send this thread to him after some comments are posted.

hrm, right up until decent interior room my vote was going to be Chevy/Geo Metro /Suzuki Swift. Instead I shall vote for a Gen7 Civic,

I vote NG900. Cheap as shit, roomy as hell, 30MPG averaged on my '94, hard to steal with the center ignition, most saab owners take good care of their cars, so it should last awhile.

Appealing or not, I think these *were* legendary theft targets for chop shop parting.

he daily drives a 03 marauder right now, a panther is a bit big for tight city parking.

80s-90s Escort in all ways except the height issue. I knew someone who didn't want to drive their beautiful E12 530i into the Bronx for work, so they bought one. Used to leave nothing on the seats but the windows down so they didnt get smashed, never had a problem

Toyota Echo or Scion xA. Perfect city cars.

Possibly a J body??

Cheap! Even good examples are now in the $2-3K range for pretty clean cars with relatively low miles.

Reliable! The 2.2L Ecotec L61 will run longer than you would possibly want to drive the car for. If something does break...cheap spare parts everywhere and anywhere in Merica or Canada. These things run to 300,000 kms (160,000 miles).

Auto: Definitely auto versions kicking around. Probably better since all the manuals were driven by boy racers like me, or young girls driving way too fast. The Auto's were driven by grandma.

Check your rust, and if you have enough headroom, other than that...these are good beaters.

Im in Philly and have an AW11 MR2 as my beater and was gonna suggest one for him until you said he was 6'7, 6'4-6'5 is the max height to fit, unless of course he gets a t-top model and sticks his head out, come to think of it thats exactly what he needs.
