"Long Live the Longdoor" (victoryred08)

So my wife and I are driving in her car over the weekend (Cobalt Coupe), windows down Sunroof open and I mention how I'm going to miss not having a coupe for a while, as we've been planning to replace her car with a CUV at the end of the year. My wife then turns to me and says that she we really don't need a CUV, a point to which I agree, and she wouldn't mind looking at something a bit more sporting as well. It looks as though priorities have shifted and I'm ecstatic!
She mentioned wanting to test drive a Challenger and maybe a Genesis Coupe; I told her we should test drive many sporting things and just to be sure she's happy ;)
I've already put together a document of all of the potential fun cars that might peak her interest and the pros/cons of each. She also really wants a sunroof. The list breaks down like so (max budget ~$36K all in CAD), feel free to add to or chastise my ideas:
2015 VW GTI 3 Door DSG
2014 Mazda CX-5 (It's the CUV at the top of our list)
2014 Mazda3 GT
2014 Camaro
2014 Hyundai Genesis Coup
2014(5) Dodge Challenger
2014 Toyobaru Twin (Despite the lack of Sunroof)
2014 Mini Cooper S
Oppo Caveat : She wants an automatic, this is her daily driver and I'm not about to argue with that.
Any suggestions?
PS: the MkVII GTI isn't just for show, I'd just love her to end up with that :)

The new Fiat Abarth is coming out in automatic next year!
But I highly approve the GTI choice, great all around car.

I was going to type Fiesta ST in all caps, but noticed the automatic caveat and died a little inside.
Golf probably the best choice.

The lack of sunroof on the boxer coupe is sad!
I'm not really a fan of VW
I'd pick the Genesis coupe out of all of those options. It's just too bad they no longer offer a 2.0T Track: all the performance shit from the R-spec but with a sunroof. They offer it on the V6 though, and they offer it on both engines in Canada. But the 2.0T is manual-only anyway so she'd be looking at the V6 anyway.

How soon are you buying? I'd wait to drive the new Mustang. I'm also not sue how your wife went from CUV to automatic sports car. It's an improvement but why the desire to have a car that's not what it was meant to be? You may as well pick up a used Murano Crosscabriolet

not sure if you are up for leasing, or if you Canucks can take advantage, but consider the Dodge lease program going on. You can lease a 2014 Challenger now, then trade it on an identical 2015 in 12 months with the same terms. Interesting concept and rates are to be excellent, plus 2 new cars in year is cool. If you want to buy a Challenger outright, wait for 2015's to hit the lot this summer. The 8 speed and interior upgrades will make it a way better car.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

My wife drives a 5-door GTI with the DSG and loves it. It is a fantastic blend of practicality and fun. Although I prefer manuals, the DSG really is an impressive transmission. I can't recommend the car highly enough.

I think she'd love a lightly used C30, good call!

We're not big into leasing, but I'm curious if the have the same program here. The 2015 would be the better choice in my mind. The eight speed auto stands to make it faster and better on gas. Plus have you seen the shots of those halos? Mmm.

I'm with ya. Lots of minor changes have really helped freshen the Chally. And the 8 speed is much better than the old Benz 5. It was strong, and the Hemi torque made the ratios work okay, but the 8 speed is lightning quick, responsive and has awesome ratio spread. I have a V6 8 speed Ram right now, and most people think it's a Hemi at first because it's damn quick.

the gen coupe looks like a good option, I'm a little leery on it, as it doesn't sound the best (2.0T) and the V6 is out of our price range. Its also kinda pricey to get the sunroof, you need to step up to the premium package (mind you, you get quite a bit for that money).

GTI is a great choice for practical fun, and the DSG is probably the best of the automatics. CX-5 would be my other choice if practicality is an important aspect.

buying in October/November, when is the new mustang slated to come out? Well, she drives an automatic coupe now, grew up fixing old cars with her dad (and coincidentally got me interested in cars). I think she just wanted more space for shuttling our friends around, but as they are all producing babies (and we have no such intentions), the likelihood of use driving anyone else around is slimming.
Also, the Murano crosscabriolet... KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Thanks for the reply, I couldn't agree more! I don't think she "gets" the GTI yet. I'm hoping once I get her behind the wheel of one she'll see the light.

It should be on the street by November. You might have a hard time finding one at or below MSRP but it should be worth a test drive. You also should try out a Manual version of the car.
But it's so unique! I swear in 20 years Oppolopnik will be looking back on that quirky oddball and wondering why we didn't buy more of them.

How about the ST?

in Canada, its $30k for the base WRX. Plus taxes, freight etc. And I'm at our budget, option a sunroof (which requires the next package) and we're going beyond that :(

It can be deal maker or breaker. As I see it:
Scenario A:
You: "Hey check this out, if you change gear with the paddle while accelerating it makes a farting noise"
Wife: "Hey Thats Fun! I wanna do it again!"
Scenario B:
You: "Hey check this out, if you change gear with the paddle while accelerating it makes a farting noise"
Wife: "Ew. Lets go see the Mazda."

a solid idea! I was just about to tell you its more expensive in Canada, but its cheaper than I though. Time to look up how much it'll cost for a sunroof!

thanks for the info, I've read that the 8 speed is pretty solid, but its always nice to hear from an owner first hand :)
When they hit the lots this summer I'll have to swing by with my wife and check them out. As much as I like the GTI, I'd be happy if she bought the Chally also (I can always buy the GTI for myself lol).
