Whenever I travel with my dog we put him in the footwell, it allows them the relax a bit more and they aren't as likely to shift around.

He holds it. This trip was only 4 hours, but I've seen him hold it for 7 before.

He spends most of the trip in his cage on the back seat, but he'll sit on the passenger's lap for the curvier bits as he is stabilised.
