Look, I am all for bashing bad and uncompetitive cars, and regardless of anything the Camry has to offer I want nothing to do with it (or ANY mainstream sedan, more importantly)...
But in light of that recent "cars that got great reviews but really sucked", I'm confused.
Despite claims otherwise, Camry still stomps the competition in reliability. Don't like Consumer Reports? TrueDelta has a better reliability survey, and from what it says the Camry has anywhere from 1/2 to 1/4 the issues of the more "exciting" competition.
Performance wise, sure, it's not a mega dynamo, but then neither is its 4 banger competition (MT test of the Fusion, Accord, and Camry Sport):
And where the 4 banger Camry loses out, the V6 more than makes up, pretty much stomping a mudhole in the 6's 2.5 and handily beating the Fusion 2.0T (as well as all the other 2.0T entrants in the segment) in a straight line... which is about the only place a mainstream sedan can even begin to approach "driving fun".
TrueDelta also shows the Camry to be either the same price or cheaper than comparably equipped Fusions and 6s.
Camry is also within spitting range of these cars in fuel economy too:
Now, is the Camry one of the least fun to drive cars in its segment? As someone who has actually driven many of the cars in this segment, including the Fusion, I can agree with that. Is the Camry one of the blandest and ugliest cars in its segment? Sure, I can agree with that. But as far as things that are beyond opinion, where exactly is the Camry not delivering on value? It is still the reliability king; it's competitive in price, fuel economy, measured performance, space, and anything else that matters to the people intended to buy it . So for Joe Sixpack, what makes it sooooooooooooooooooooo much worse than something like a Mazda6 or Fusion, which are only better at things the general public doesn't care about anyway?
You know what's funniest about the Camry/Corolla hate... a lot of folks who bash these cars call the people who buy them dumb or sheep. Meanwhile, from what I'm seeing, it seems the folks who scream the loudest about these cars being so terrible have next to no real world experience with the cars, as well as no knowledge of their actual competitiveness in their respective segments. They just parrot the Jalop status quo. So the folks crying are no better than the people they demonize for not buying a car they agree with. Huh... imagine that!
I'm hoping the Camry's loudest critics can prove me wrong with facts... and actual experiences with modern Camrys and other competitors in this segment. I've had extensive time with a lot of the cars for work and test drives for family so I've at least seen them... anyone who thinks a Fusion is some kind of driving revelation is in for a world of disappointment, at least from what I've seen.
So yea, Camry doesn't seem that bad to me, although again I would never buy one with my own money.

You may be slightly off-base here in your gauge of the current, at least here in Oppo. For a more accurate summation, I think:
"Camry" - meh
"But V6!" - okay.jpg
"Corolla" - ZOMGWHY
I don't think Oppo at least has the distaste for the Camry's beigeness that it reserves for the Corolla - not even in the same league.

Well this is a site where 'enthusiasts' buy the Camry of 'sports cars'. Come at me., shield's up.

Note to self. Do not recommend Ford Fusion.

I would not hesitate to recommend a Camry to anyone looking for an appliance to get them from point A to point B.

My neighbors bought (leased?) a brand new Camry V6 last year. They're now looking to trade it in because, and I quote, "It's just too boring"
That's coming from a family whose previous car to the Camry was a 1998 Contour GL.

Camry is not even exciting enough to require a trip to the shop. Just gets you from A to B. Over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over

Yep, because a Fusion or Mazda6 are the kinds of cars you go on a drive to nowhere in. Come on now, spare me the bold face lies. If a Camry is soul crushing all the other cars in its class are not far behind

80% of that is probably MFT related.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. Still, if your new car doesn't work right, it doesn't work right. I definitely prefer to see reliability scores broken out like Consumer Reports does. Non-functioning radio < non-functioning transmission.

Equip with base engine and automatic transmission, and it costs more than the Subaru Legacy.
I *like* the subaru legacy.
